Really High temps with a Gigabyte 470 SOC

Really High temps with a Gigabyte 470 SOC
« on: November 17, 2010, 05:08:20 am »
Hello
i am currently using a gigabyte 470 SOC and i am concerned about the high temperatures

my first one idled at 61c and during gaming loaded at 94c with a vid of 1.012
i returned this card as i thought the temps cant be right so it must be faulty

my current 2nd card arrvied today and the temps are even worse
at stock speed it idles at 67c and while gaming goes up to 92-96c with a vid of 0.950

now i am not happy with these temperatures

i paid a £60 premium for the SOC because its meant to run cooler and all the review indicated the same

i don't think my system is at fault either
i have a good case and good air flow with a dedicated 120mm 1450 rpm fan for the gpu area
and the current temps i posted are with the side panel open

have i been unlucky and got 2 faulty cards?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

These cards all work at high temperatures and even though the SOC version has a good cooling system it is basically an overclocked version of the standard card and as such will produce even more heat than normal. Have you checked the fan speed on the card?

You say you have good airflow through your case but just having enough fans doesn't necessarily mean that there is a good airflow. Have you checked to make sure that the fans are pulling/pushing in the right directions?

Hi WildOne,

Can you tell on wich games do you have souch high temps?

I own one of these and on a room without without AC i have middle 80ths Celsius on hard gaming. But on stress test I have middles 90ths and even high 90 (almos reaching 100ºC)

If you consider that I have a GTX 460 Gigabyte that goes at 65° in full load, it should not be a surprise that the 470 goes at 95°

The Idle though is a bit high I think!! My 460 goes in idle at 25°/30°.....are you sure that in your case you have an appropriate air circulation? Because in the summer your card will die!!! ;D

You told that you measured the temps with the case opened.....well that's the first mistake! A good airflow goes good if wel done, and if the case is closed!!!
What is your fan predisposition?
For your card, you should have at least one front pulling in, one rear pulling out and at least one up pulling out...each one with a good CFM ;)
Do you also have a good CPU cooler? because it will surely help to cool even the things around it (a hot CPU will heat the GPU too!!!)

Thanks for the update. It's a useful piece of information to know about and much appreciated.  :D

Yes I guess that it does make sense but I wouldn't have thought about it before now.
