My 970 is 125w which is compatoble. From the other forum it appears yours is 140w which may not be compatible.

Probably cchaos does not think that you're lying just pointing out that you say you are running a 965 and wants some clarification. Investing in a 970 CPU only to discover that it won't run on the motherboard would be an expensive mistake to make.

Like you I have lots of different hardware that I mix and match, especially when I  am trying to troubleshoot for other users. I don't think anyone wants to see a list of all my hardware but they do like to see screenshots or have other "evidence" to validate what I am saying, when it is appropriate.
Exactly. Im not calling him a liar, but its all too easy to claim what you like when youre hiding behind a screen, hence why Im asking for a screenshot.

Just like you guys I also have more than one computer (although the other one is much older than my desktop which is what Im talking about here)

to cchaos:
I would also have to agree with this:
Frankly, I'd get an 965 BE or 1055T instead but if you don't want to overclock I guess it's a good option.
There really isn't a lot of headroom on the 970 when it comes to overclocking so unless you are planning on running it at stock you would be better off not hoping from too much more fom this CPU.
Stock to me would be fine. Otherwise I would just OC my 7750+ BE

My 970 is 125w which is compatoble. From the other forum it appears yours is 140w which may not be compatible.
And that, is what is concerning me:

OK, so Ive actually brought it. And so far all its doing is just sitting on my computer desk still sealed.

The online shop where I got it is here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-275-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328 (link is straight to product, states that its a 140W)

However, when I check the part numbers against here http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X4%20970%20Black%20Edition%20-%20HDZ970FBK4DGM%20%28HDZ970FBGMBOX%29.html you can see that they say its a 125W.

Photos of the processor in the box are available if you want to see them, but for now Im not going to open the box until I have a clear "what are you worrying about? Just open it" or a "send that back"

Oh, and lesson learnt: always double check that the board is compatible before committing to buy (normally I do, but I though it would be fine)

Hi,

from what I can find on the AMD website there is only one version of this CPU and it's 125 Watt.
Check Here: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/phenom-ii/Pages/phenom-ii-model-number-comparison.aspx

Now, assuming that AMD's website is correct then I would probably open the box and try out the CPU on your Mobo. You don't really have anything to lose and you could find that, as fadsarmy has stated, it works OK.

I cant argue about that. Im sure AMD know more about its own processors than a site that sells them.

Do I assume that I can just jump to the latest BIOS version?

fadsarmy, Im sorry for the bickering (my bad), but I really would like to know which BIOS version youre using. If you just want to type it, then thats fine. If you want to put it as a screenshot, then thats also fine. Either way, I would really like to know

I'm using Bios F9G.
As I thought you might be. Right, downloading that as soon as Ive finished typing this post.

Trust me it works.
Ok, I trust you

Yes, and as I said yesterday: everything I find about the CPU in question states its a 125W.

Tell you what, if this actually works, I will let Overclockers know that they have made a mistake (or I might just post that as a review)

Im not going to try doing it tonight (bit late, feeling a little tired) but I will try when I finish work tomorrrow

Well, Ive flashed the BIOS - worked. System felt a bit faster upon boot up as well

Ive just finished putting the new CPU, booted her up and shes decided to detect the X4 970. Shes been on for about 10 mins and is sitting in the BIOS health status at about 38 to 39 oC. Gonna leave her for a while so that the thermal paste can set and then its screen shot time (along with a photo of the BIOS)

Again, sorry to be a wind up, but thankyou for your help

A few screenshots from Windows XP:

The only bit of editing I have done is to the System Properties tab where I have removed my name and the key

1.472v cpu voltage. That looks high.

That's why I said this thing is pointless for overclocking. It's basically near the limit of what Phenom II chips are capable of.

As an example, one of the early Phenom II's that I have ( x3 720 BE ) runs at 1.325v stock. Funny thing that it can do 3.2Ghz at these volts, too ( stock 2.8Ghz ).

Just to let everyone know that Gigabyte have now officially validated the Phenom 970 CPU on the GA-MA770-UD3 running BIOS F9g.

Thanks to all those who posted about this.
