GA-P55-US3L USB port problems
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:01:28 pm »
GA P55 US3L rev 1.0 F1  - intel 4 core i5 cpu (750@2.67 GHz) - Corsiar 2Gb ram - 500 Gb SATA HDD - Winpower ATX400 psu - Win 7 home premium 64 bit - original default bios settings.

It seems unable to support more than 2 or 3 USB ports, if an extra USB device is connected it reports as not found or faulty, the USB ports on the back plate appear more stable, but the USB ports connected to the headers on the motherboard are much worse, connecting a 4 slot card reader to the any of the 3 headers often causes corruption of memory cards.

This problem was apparent when new, i reported it to the builder (computer planet) they suggested faulty wiring on the USB ports & accepted it back. They fitted the mobo / drive into a new case and returned it, seemed OK till one day I connected both my USB external drives (also scanner, printer, webcam etc) one of the drives started clicking - so shut down in panic. On checking found card reader not working at all, opened the case to find card reader not plugged into USB header (that's why the original USB fault didn't show)

Plugging the card reader in caused original fault of USB ports failing with only 2 or 3 devices connected, trying another known good card reader also causes the fault to appear.

So 2 cases, 2 psus, 2 card readers, any ideas please...

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Well it seems like you have been fooled by your supplier in the first place and rather than fix the fault just disconnected the troublesome device. ::)

How long have you had the computer?

What graphics are you using?

I suspect that it could be a lack of power from the cheapo PSU that has been installed. The manufacturer recommends 550W for this mainboard minimum and if you have a lot of things connected obviously even this might not be enough.

Thanks for quick reply, NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT 1GByte (sorry, forgot it on original spec header) & the PC is still under RTB guarantee (I'd rather not send it back to those cowboys again and be without it for 12 -15 days), anyhow Courier's cost would be better spent on components.

My son ordered this system box for me as a present, so I can't complain too much. After it's so called "return & repair" Ha! - I suggested it could be a voltage regulation problem on either the Motherboard or PSU, now that you also suspect the underpowered PSU I've ordered a Corsair 600W CX (the winpower ATX400 has already developed a really noisy fan and needs replacing anyhow, not surprising as they are available from £11 online).

Will let you know how it goes with new PSU (I chose free 5 day delivery) Thanks!

Yes I would think the PSU is the most likely cause of the problem. So many firms and people specify good components and then expect some really rubbish, small PSU to power the gear. Trouble is if the PSU fails it can easilly take a few other components with it and it can end up being a very expensive repair.

I 'm glad you like it as I am sure there are plenty of people on whom it's wasted. It is rather truncated there because of size linitations.
The full version is: There are 10 types of people in the world, the ones who understand binary and those who don't.
