GA-EP45-DS5 no longer boots

GA-EP45-DS5 no longer boots
« on: November 29, 2010, 03:47:04 pm »
My GA-EP45-DS5 recently just stopped working and now it will no longer boot up and POST. I had left my PC for about a minute and came back to find that it had completely froze up and had to turn it off from the switch. It will now only turn on and stay on for no less than a second and then switch off. It continues to do this in a loop until I cut the power. I have reset the CMOS, removed the battery for over 8 hour and used the CMOS clear jumper but the problem still persists. I have tested the PSU on another machine and it works OK as well as testing another PSU on this motherboard. I have removed every single component except the CPU and the problem still occurs. If I do removed the CPU however it will power on and stay on but will not POST or give any indication that there is a fault (no beeping, diagnostic lights indicate no fault). Unfortunately I have no spare CPU to test with nor do I have another similar motherboard. I'm suspecting a single component on the motherboard has overloaded or something but I'm out of ideas of what to check next. It seems the board is hopefully still withing warranty (bought June/July 2008) so I'm hoping I can get a replacement/refund from the supplier.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The motherboard wont work at all without the CPU so it is not suprising that nothing happened when you tried to boot without it.

I take it you do have a buzzer installed?
If not install one.

Put in one stick of memory in the first slot and using only that, the CPU, PSU and keyboard try and boot and post what beeps it makes.

I just tried what you suggested but it makes no beeps. I've checked to see that the cable was plugged in right.

In that case you will need to remove the motherboard from the case along with the CPU/heatsink/fan, power supply, one stick onf memory in the first slot nearest the CPU, the buzzer and lay iot all on a bit of cardboard on the worktop. Plug in the keyboard and then attempt to boot. see if anything happens.

Still didn't work. :( Boots up for a second then switches off.

Any beeps?

Right then. Change the memory for a different module and try again.

That didn't work, either. There's no beeping what so ever and I've made sure the speaker is connected right.

I've upload a video as it should help explain it a bit better than with just words. It's a little dark but you can see it starting up and then shutting off.

Yes I see what you mean and that is fairly much what I thought you were expaining. I couldn't see the connectioon for the speaker in  the video though. Where have you connected it to?

It's connected at the bottom left so not really visible. I'm having to use the speaker from the case you see at the bottom.

OK fine. Just wanted to clarify that first.

What PSU is it you are using? Make and model please?

Well it would seem that it is either the motherboard or the CPU then. Did you purchase them both from the same supplier?

PSU is a Targan BZ Series 500W.

I bought the CPU and Motherboard from the same supplier but the CPU is now out of warranty it would seem. It was OEM and I purchase it in July 2008 along with the motherboard. I think OEM CPUs only get 1 year as apposed to 3 for retail.

Right two things come to mind.

Firstly can you list all the items that the PSU is supplying please?

Secondly does your PSU have a "Turbo" switch on it ? If it does turn it on and see it that makes any difference.

I think you are correct regarding the warranty on OEM CPUs.

The PSU was just supplying the board and nothing else when I tested it. However, in the video I used a PSU from another computer (Seasonic 400W) which also has some hard drives connected.

The Targan PSU was already set on Turbo and had been for the lifetime of the board prior to it failing.

I would have to say that it is either the motherboiard or the CPU that is faulty then. There is no easy way to check which it is so I would suggest that as the motherboard is still under warranty you arrange to RMA it and see what happens.

I guess that's the only thing I can really do at this point. I'll either have to buy a new CPU or motherboard. I'll raise an RMA with the supplier.

I appreciate the help and support you have given, thanks.
