EX58-UD4P - 2nd Video Card Stopped Working
« on: December 01, 2010, 05:12:01 am »
Hi
Just recently I was informed that my second EVGA GTX 285 has been stopped by windows because it has reported a problem (Code 43). The majority of research I've performed indicates that Code 43 means the card is dead but after swapping the cards around and successfully booting each individual card by itself proves to me that both cards are still working indicating possibly the motherboard is malfunctioning. I was hoping that someone else has come across the same problem before I go and spend more money on another motherboard.
The rest of my system is as follows:

Antec Twelve Hundred Case
Gigabyte EX58-UD4P F13
Intel Core i7-920 D0 running stock standard
6Gb Corsair PC3-10600
Merc Stealth Keyboard
Razer Deathadder
2 x Western Digital 2Tb Black Drives
1 x Western Digital 1TB HDD
1 x Samsung 500Gb HDD
1 x Seagate 1.5TB HDD
2 x 22" BenQ Monitors

Not sure what else I could mention (running on 1 hrs sleep).
Thank you

Ok are you using the latest drivers for your video card?

What power supply do you have?

Check the seating of the cards. Check the power connections and also swap the SLI bridges if you can.

One  more thing to check as you haven't mentioned it is that PSU. Make sure that it is powerfull enough as they deterioate with time and usage and if it isn't supplying enough power now that is just the sort of symptom you would expect to see.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I recently updated the drivers after the error appeared so I know there up to date.
My PSU is a Corsair HX1000W.
Not sure how to calculate how much power I need but I thought this would be sufficient.
The 2 W/D 2TB HDD's are a recent addition but I cant recall if the problem occurred before or after I installed them.
I removed 3 other HDD's  to install them and just recently ordered another W/D 2TB HDD.
If someone knows how to calculate how much power is required with this setup I'd appreciate it if they could let me know.
I only received 1 SLI bridge plus a 3-way SLI bridge with the motherboard. Is it possible to use the 3-way SLI bridge with only 2 video cards?
Is Corsair still a good brand of PSU or can anyone suggest a better PSU?
Thanks again guys

Your PSU should be fine as the Corsair HX1000W is a good make and size so no worries there.

How have you got the hard drives configured?

I am not sure of the answer to your SLI bridge question but I would have thought that it was ok. Maybe someone with more knowledge of SLI setups could help here.

THe drivers are not 100% safe just because they are the newest ones as there have been quite a lot of driver issues recently and some people have even downgraded their drivers to older versions for more stability.

Never bothered with Raid configurations.
I've been trialling HDD Regenerator which keeps informing me that my W/D 1TB and WD 2TB HDD are on the same ATA channel.
Not sure if this has any bearings on my problem, just I'd mention because you never know.
Apparently new drivers are expected soon so I'll wait before I revert to older drivers.

Are you using any other cards in the computer apart from the GPU?

I am assuming that you are using the PCIE X16_1 and PCIE 16_2 slots for the two cards.

Just checking on the other things that share the PCIE bus bandwidth. Try disabling the GSATA controller in  the BIOS.

Corsiar are a great brand of PSU so as DM said you have no worries there! Have you tried going back to a know driver that worked for you? New drivers can be a little dodgy and don't always work for everyone.....I'm running the 260.89 and they are fine for me.

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between the GSATA and normal SATA controller is, and, considering I have a 2TB HDD attached to 1 of them, does this have any affect on the problem I'm encountering.
Thanks

GSATA is the name Gigabyte uses for their extra SATA controller added to the standard southbridge ICH10R controller for extra ports. It isn't actually as quite as fast as the Intel chip but they are both rated as SATA2. The only bearing it could have on your problem is a bandwidth one as they share the same bus (PCIE) as the graphics as far as I can remember.
