If you are still having trouble I would suggest doing a fresh install of Windows and starting from a clean slate.

Is your version of Windows genuine?

Format the drive and start again. At least then you know there is nothing wrong with your installation.

Yes, it's genuine.  I actually went to the store and bought a full version so that I didn't have to deal with first installing XP and then using my upgrade copy.

Ugh.  A fresh install?  I just did the install on Sunday onto an empty SSD.  Do you really think I need to reinstall?  I guess now is better than when I get my other software installed.

OK before we do a fresh install just let's have a look in Device Manager and see if there is anything wrong there.

Right well you have eight instances of the HD audio device so there is some problem there in that it keeps  finding the same thing.

I would suggest that you remove them all (the nVidia ones) and then refresh the list and let it find it again.

You also have a problem with your Marvell 9128 SATA3 controller. I would advise you to disable that in the BIOS unless you are using it.

I've killed the nVidia drivers.  I told Windows to uninstall 1, and all others followed.  What is the Marvel driver used for?

The Marvell 9128 controller chip drives the SATA3 ports on the motherboard.

So what is the state of play now?

so that's weird.  I thought my SSD and HD were already plugged into the SATA3

Well I would make sure that they are not before disabling it in the BIOS.

WE HAVE SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shut down the machine (again) to make sure I was talking correctly about my SATA3 usage (yes, my SDD is using it).  Rebooted, and all of the nVidia lines are back in Device Manager.  I was really disappointed, but thought I'd try unplugging the speakers and plugging them back in to the front.  I got the pop up window to confirm I was putting something in the front.  I confirmed it, but still didn't have sound.  At that point, I got distracted by a phone call.  I tell you that, because when I came back about 3 minutes later I went to do a search in Internet Explorer.  When I hit enter, I heard the 'click' sound through the speakers.  I don't understand why the delay worked, but it did.

So, I do have SATA3 being used.  Device Manager tells me the driver isn't installed.  I tried having it search for the driver, but it couldn't find one.  I can't find anything about it on the Gigabyte site.  Where should I look?

Well I'm glad that we have got the sound back now at least. As far as hte Marvell driver goes there should be a copy of it on your installation disk and on the Gigabyte website. You didn't say what revision your motherboard was  and confirm that it was the UD3R as opposed to what you put in the title but if you would like to confirm those I can give you a link to the driver.

Sorry - I thought I had responded.  It's a revision 2, and is the UD3R.

Actually it was my mistake you had replied back on page 1.

The SATA3 firmware is part of the BIOS and so it is probably a BIOS update that you need to do. The latest version is FE1 and available for your board from here:

Make sure that you update it via the QFlash utility.

I've updated the BIOS.  This writeup helped me quite a bit:  http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,3651.0.html

I've got a song playing in iTunes right now, and I have the sound mixer opened up.  I can see the level jumping up and down as the song is playing...but I have no sound.  I don't think this is a result of the BIOS update.  I think I lost the sound again prior to that.  I just don't know when or why.  This is getting REALLY frustrating!  >:( :(
