GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) - DVD-drive not working properly (Boot&Windows)

Just bought and assembled a system with a GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) motherboard.
DVD-drive is visible in BIOS and on start-up, also in Windows.
When trying to boot from the DVD the computer restarts and if I'm in Windows the OS freezes and won't let go until I've opened the DVD-drive.

I got:
Motherboard: GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) with BIOS FD
CPU: Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-950
RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz 6GB CL9
PSU: Cooler Master 750W
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit

I've tried:

* two different DVD-drives, one IDE and one S-ATA, both worked two days ago.

* four different cables (S-ATA & IDE)

* back to fail-safe settings in BIOS

* failing that, upgraded the BIOS to FD

Everything else seems to work just fine, I'm starting to wonder if the motherboard is broken in some way.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The first thing to do is to clear your CMOS memory completely.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self and then press F10 to save and exit.

When you have done that post back here.

Hmm. It works kinda so far, seems much slower than usual. Thanks!

May I ask why this worked? I'm not new to computers but hardware isn't my expertise.

For a start you were running the failsafe settings which are not as good as the optimised ones and you had also been "playing around" so it was a good idea to take everything back to the start line. I would have gone on from there if it hadn't worked already.

On a seperate note it often causes problems having both IDE and SATA both in use on the same board.

Maybe it was lucky that I didn't mentioned that I had tried Optimised, it was the first thing I tried.

Yeah mixing IDE and S-ATA isn't a good idea and now I'm going to use only S-ATA.

Thanks again for the help, it was really quick and easy!
