x4 970 doesn't fit on GA-MA770T-UD3P?
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:00:38 pm »
Hi,

Run into a snag here. I recently bought the Phenom II x4 970 because the page for the GA-MA770T-UD3P says that with a BIOS update, it supports the processor in question. However, I've come to find that the metal "hooks" on the side of the heatsink don't seem to actually reach far enough to be able to attach to the motherboard. The heatsink on the X4 is actually a bit taller than the heatsink on my previous CPU, which was an X3.

So my question is, am I missing something? The fan is the stock one that came with the X4. Is my only option to send it back or find a new fan/heatsink? How would I know whether or not any future fans would even fit on this motherboard?

Trust me, I've tried. I don't think I'm supposed to exert the amount of pressure this thing would need to get both of those hooks in, let alone using the clamp that locks it in place.

Edit: I'm kind of hoping someone tells me I'm an idiot and there's some magic switch on the motherboard that raises the part that the hooks on the heatsink hook onto or something.

Hi there,

first thing to check is that your CPU is inserted into the socket correctly and is sitting flat and locked down.

If the cooler still doesn't fit properly and you have trouble connecting the clips then do what I do. Connect one side then push firmly on the opposite side of the clip. You can use quite a bit of pressure to get the clip down but it is better if you do this with the motherboard outside of the PC case and laying on a firm surface.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

hi
essentialy the cooler has exactly the same mounts as your x3 cooler so should fit no problem some of them seem a bit tight but do fit in the end
