« on: February 18, 2011, 02:59:04 pm »
Hi I have noticed a few strange noises coming from my Zalman CPU Cooler it is quite old, i tried cleaning it but that didn't help. I am thinking of changing it should i stick to Zalman the CNPS10X Extreme or I quiet like the top end Corsair A70 Air Series Universal CPU Heatsink (CAFA70).

Hi there,

when it comes to CPU coolers there is a big choice out there and it can be a bit confusing finding one that a) you like and b) does the job. Having looked at both of the coolers they are pretty similar in design and both use a retention clip to mount on an AMD system. This has an advantage over some others in that, you don't have to remove the motherboard when it comes to mounting them.

Either will do what you want but if I were buying I would probably go for the Corsair but double check the measurements to make sure that it will fit in your case and won't cause a problem for your RAM modules.

Of course, another option might be to just replace the fan on your existing cooler.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Nifty trick for the thrifty set out there, when you pull the noisy  fan out for cleaning , spend a few extra minutes and re-pack the bearing.

Peal of the the sticker off the back. pry out the rubber gromit with a pin, squeeze in about two match heads worth of high quality silicon grease with a syringe and re-assemble.........this will quieten down the noisy bugger no end and get you a couple of thousand hours more before you really need to replace!!!
