Problem with upgrading to 6Gb Ram
« on: December 25, 2010, 07:50:27 pm »
Hi everyone.

This are my system specs:

OS Name   Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise
Version   6.1.7600 Build 7600
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA EP45t DS3R
System Model   GBTUACPI
System Type   x64-based PC
Processor   Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q9550  @ 2.83GHz, 2833 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date   GBT    - 42302e31, Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG, 6/18/2008
Hardware Abstraction Layer   Version = "6.1.7600.16385"
Total Physical Memory   5.00 GB
Available Physical Memory   3.34 GB
Total Virtual Memory   9.99 GB
Available Virtual Memory   8.03 GB
Page File Space   5.00 GB

My problem is I've been trying to upgrade to 6Gb of ram but for some reason when I try this, windows freezes just a few minutes after startup, even though when I right click on my computer, it shows the 6gb of ram. I have 4 ram slots. and I place them in the following order:
slot 1: 2gb
slot2: 1gb
slot 3: 2gb
slot4: 1gb

I removed one of the 1gb sticks and now I'm using 5gb and it's not freezing up anymore... but I want to be able to use the full 6Gb.

any ideas of what could be the problem?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum also Happy Christmas.

It sounds like you have a faulty module but to check i would suggest running Memtest86+ on all your memory sticks one at time in the first slot for at least ten loops each. I would start with the one that yopu have removed and are dubious of. If you get any errors the module is faulty.

ok I'm running the memtest like you said.. I'll keep you updated... by the way, memtest aside, should I have any specific setting set on my BIOS fo when I upgrade my ram?

thanks!

Well the BIOS version you have copied and pasted into the post is incorrect.  Can you check what BIOS version you are really running and what motherboard revision number you have please?

Are you trying to run your memory in auto settings still or have you manuallly inserted the correct settings/voltages in the BIOS?
