X58A-UD3R - Resume from Hibernate Locks with USB3 Installed
« on: December 25, 2010, 11:43:34 pm »
Hi All

Hope one of you guys can help me please.  I have a new X58A-UD3R with new install of Windows 7 (x64) up and running.  However as soon as I install the USB3 drivers (from the CD and website) I run in to a problem...

...if I put the PC to Sleep (works ok) then disconnect the power the PC will quite rightly attemp to boot from the hibernation file.  It starts ok but at the point where is should allow me to enter my windows password it just freezes.  My main monitor has some kind of signal going to it because it wont enter sleep mode so something is happening.

I cant disable USB 3 because I have a drive on the way to plug into it.  I am using the latest non-beta BIOS FD.

EDIT: further info - messing with the drivers (removing, updating etc) will more often than not completely lock the PC.

Any help appreciated.

TIA, Rich

Hi Rich and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The device you have plugged into the USB3 port, is it USB3 capable?

If not  I am fairly sure that you can disable USB3 in the BIOS and still use the ports as USB2.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

However, as I said, I cant disable USB 3 as I need it for a new drive which is on its way.  I couldnt get past the locking up so I went out and bought a Dynamode USB 3.0 PCI-E card which doesnt cause the problem.  I shouldnt have to rely on 3rd party cards but needs must!

Thanks again though and happy new year!

Latest BIOS would be the best thing to try before buying an add-in card, but since you already have I guess it doesn't matter.

Did you try updating the NEC firmware, and using the latest actual drivers?  Gigabyte doesn't generally host the latest drivers, so these may be worth a try for you if you think you can still return the add-in card.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Np, I didnt upgrade the firmware for the USB 3 card (didnt know you could to be honest) but I did try the latest driver.  Will the firmware affect my addon USB3 card?

Thanks again, Rich

For further info, I updated both the firmware and drivers and still no change - completely useless for my requirements unfortunately...just glad the 3rd party card works (which incidentely has the same chipset).

Thanks again.

Sorry to hear the firmware didn't help any!

Ya it would be the same and you can update your card if you want, if it will allow it, all USB 3.0 right now is the same NEC chips

Just a shame really that there isn't more devices out there on the market to utilise the new standard yet.

I can confirm this problem. Installing BIOS FE and NEC firmware from link earlier in the thread does not resolve the problem. The only workaround is to disable the NEC USB 3.0 controller in BIOS. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to have a better resolution...

I am sure they are aware, but please do report this here so they have more issue reports to show the BIOS team, thanks!

OMG! I thought I'd never find the answer to this. I am so thankful you found it!

The electric in my building goes out once in a while and I need my PC up all the time. I usually login remotely to work on it but if it cannot come back from hibernation it's basically useless. Sleep mode + WakeOnLan is important to keep electric costs down and keep it green. I turned off USB3 from the BIOS and it magically started working again.

I'm sorry you had to buy an additional USB3 card when you already paid for this feature on this board!  This is my first Gigabyte board. Are they good at fixing this type of issues? Cause the way this is, it looks like I won't be able to turn this feature on any time soon and I just saw some new USB3 external drives on sale too. Bummer!

If anyone hears back from Gigabyte on this please post. I'll do the same. I already filed a claim from the posted link.

FYI...
I found version 2.0.32 of the NEC Renesas USB 3.0 driver. Gigabyte has 2.0.30 posted. I tried it and nothing changed. The issue remains.
This will most likely have to be a firmware update.

Got a reply yesterday:
-------------------------
Dear Customer

Enabling USB 3.0 should not effect it, which mode you are testing under and both S1 and S3 exhibit the same issue?
Do update USB 3.0 driver directly off our website and if testing with S3 mode please attempt to test with only one memory module installed.

Thank you
-------------------------
Of course we're talking about S3. S1 is not true sleep. It's standby. I tested what they suggested and it failed again. Anyone else want to give it a shot?
