Yet another odd Win 7 clean install problem on GA-870A-UD3

What you have is an upgrade only copy of Windows 7. It allows you to do a semi-clean upgrade from XP or Vista to Windows 7. It DOES NOT allow a completely clean install - you must install over the old XP or Vista installation. Then it will activate. On a clean disk it will NOT activate.

That said - if you call Microsoft and explain that you have build a completely new machine and why - Microsoft can (but does not have too) activate Windows 7 for you.

I went thru the same process as you and since Microsoft had a record of me they did activate Windows 7 for me.

I gave up in messing around and started over: Re-formatted HDD, installed 64 bit from the upgrade disk.  Would not activate so called M$ and they did it for me.  Sometimes it is better to cut losses and start over earlier anat later.

Gave up fixing and started over. re-formatted the HDD, installed Win 7 64 bit. Called M$ on toll free and they activated.
Sometimes, it is best to cut losses and start over 'early' and not get mired in the OS muck...
Working fine now.

pleased you got it sorted. I understand that MS are worried about piracy and their profits but sometimes it is ridiculous the hurdles you're put through to activate the software.

Yes I quite agree absic. Often people with pirated copies of the OS have an easier and quicker install than the ones with genuine versions. In some ways I think it must be counter productive for Micro$oft as they can never stop the pirates as has been shown in the past.
