Power problems with 470 GTX SOC "Maybe"

On my custom made new rig, I've bought the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 470 SOC
Plugged the 470 GTX card on my motherboard "X58" with the "Driver version 260.99" & gave it power with ONLY ONE CORD containing TWO 6-pin PEG from a 500 watt power supply. As opposed to two dedicated 6 pin cords.

Every thing boots on normally but, when I try to load a game or any demanding 3D application the system restarts "i.e. crashes".

Is powering this specific card with TWO dedicated six pin cordes from the power supply is a must? or in your opinion what do you think the problem is?

It's not like the 2nd 6pin power-in on the card isn't plugged. It is powered with the same cord that is powering the first pin "one cord split into two six pin power connecters".

Sorry for the redudancy of information but I just want to make sure that my posy is clear to everyone.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I wouldn't be suprised as the more power that is drawn through a cable the more the resistance increases and you get a voltage drop so that is quite possible. So the more the card needs the less it will actually get in relation.

So your advice is to power the card with two dedicated six pin power cables?
Hence, I'll be changing the PSU first thing tomorrow

Do you think that something else might cause such a problem? "drivers, faulty card, etc..."

If you need any more specific information about my system PLS don't hesitate to ask

PS I am using the latest Nvidia driver & not the driver that came with the card

I am fairly sure that if you get a decent PSU with about at least 650W output, two PCIE connectors and a single 12V rail that your problem will be gone.

I got a new PSU, everything takes power "i.e. MB, rams, etc..." when I plug the SATA data cable of any drive "SSD, DVD, HDD" THE SYSTEM DOESNT BOOT. "on my new XFX 850 watts"
Same thing on another OCZ 700 watts PSU"
When I plug the old generic PSU it boots but you already know the problem with that PSU "No two dedicated six pin for the GPU card"

PS I took out my GTX 470 SOC card & plugged it on another system. It booted like butter . Even tried the same thing with the rams on another system & everything boots well. I am even assisted by a technician who is only a pro in assembling".
Could it be the motherboard?? If it is then why it is booting on the OLD GENERIC PSU??

Any help PLS, I am lost

Certainly a weird problem. I would suggest removing everyhting from the case and doing a rebiuld outside just in case there is a short or something.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or use the motherboard box that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory(in the white slot) and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard.

Add the keyboard and now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot.

The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps. Please post what sounds it makes.

Just so I get this straight:

Motherboard outside the case with the installed components only: CPU, CPU Cooler & fan, one stick of memory, PSU out, then plug the keyboard, power it up & tell you what kind of sound it makes "if any", right???

Yes that's correct. Just be careful of static electricity as it can damage your components.

BTW, I forgot to mention that during this mess I plugged in my machine a "Gigabyte 9500 GT" & it booted.

Surely there were lots of parts unplugged "e.g. DVD drive, non booting HDD, etc..." .
However, I'll do as you requested & keep you posted.

I did what you asked me to do & everytime it was giving me different sounds "sometimes it was a single continuous long beep & other times it was one long & two short". Sometimes it gave different beeps.

Due to many problems, e.g.  when I change the IDE to AHCI the system doesn't boot anymore "There are others also". I am now being given the choice to exchange my current motherboard "Zotac X58 SLI-A-E" with the Foxconn Flamming Blade GTI. Do you advice me to get another Zotac motherboard "same model" or to shift to the foxconn?
The reason I am concered is that the Foxconn Flamming Blade GTI might not be compatible with my Gigabyte GTX470 model GV-N470SO-13I. As I have read on a couple of posts.
I've always been a Gigabyte fanboy when it comes to boards this is the FIRST time I shift to a different brand due to availability & price.

System specs:
Case: Thermaltake Element V
PSU: XFX 850W Black Edition
CPU: Intel I7 950
Rams: Corsair DDR3 3X2GB Triple channel 1600
GPU: Gigabyte GTX470 model GV-N470SO-13I
Storage: SSD OCZ Vertex2 90GB "Booting drive"
Motherboard: Awaiting your advice

I am afraid I cannot advise you on your chioce of motherboards mainly as I am not familiar with either one. I can onlu suggest that you do some research and ask around to see which is more likely the better board. Sorry.

No I wasn't suggesting that, it is only that not really knowing anything about them I am in no better position than you to make the choice. I would just look them up and compare features the same as you can. Besides I do think that motherboard choice is fairly personal depending on what you want to do with the system.
