GA-P35C-DS3R DDR3 Memory size limit

GA-P35C-DS3R DDR3 Memory size limit
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:58:56 pm »
This board has 4xDDR2 slots + 2x DDR3 slots.

Both DDR2 & DDR3 are reported as being dual channel capable.

The technical spec for this board says that it supports up to 8G of DDR2 but only 4G of DDR3:
http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2551#sp

Is the 4G limit on DDR3 still correct? (If so, why is it different to the DDR2 limit?)

Or, was it just the case that there wasn't anything larger than a 2G memory stick when this board was manufactured, so anything more than 2x2G of DDR3 was impossible at the time...

If I fitted 2x4G of DDR3, what would happen?

No comment from Gigabyte? Or anyone else? Anyone ?!

(Do their technicians use this forum ?)

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

No I am afraid that Gigabyte technicians don't officially check the board but they do have an administrator that keeps an eye on things.

I am not sure of the answer to your question to be perfectly honest but at worst if you tried 2 x 4 GB modules and they weren't supported the motherboard just wouldn't "see" the full amount. Obviously you would have to be running 64 bit windows anyway.

You can confirm this by taking out a ticket with GGTS but please be aware they normally take around a week to answer.

Hello there,
This mobo has a ddr3 limit of 4gb because it has two slots for ddr3 rams, and ddr2 limit of 8gb because it has 4 slots for ddr2 rams, and for each slot regardless off ram type (ddr2 or ddr3), there is a limitation to the maximum memory the slot can handle and that is 2gb. So 4x(2gb ddr2)=8gb ddr2, or 2x(2gb ddr3)=4gb ddr3. And one last thing; you cannot have them both at the same time, you either have to go for ddr2 or ddr3.

Ahh... thanks Leomax.

So you're saying that I couldn't install 2x4G in the DDR2 slots either - even though this would not exceed the 8G upper limit for DDR2 (?)

Was that a limitation of the P35 Northbridge ?

Apart from Gigabyte's "supported memory" list (which I'm sure we all look at, then ignore!) how would I have been able to tell this before trying it?

Probably your best bet would be the memory manufacturer's website as they normally have their own QVL for the various boards and are more up to date.

I would be very interested in finding out the answer to the original posters question also as I am not thinking about upgrading to DDR3 memory with this board - I would really like to go with 2x4GB modules of DDR3 memory if possible...anyone got any updates on this?

It might be a good idea to post a query with GGTS here:

I've already asked Giggabyte the same question... I'll post back if/when I get a reply.

There's a post on the OCZ forum which suggests that 2x4G DDR3 should work with this board - whether it does or not is another matter...

I've not managed to find anything which says there was a 2G limit per slot for the ICH9R chipset.
If anynore knows different, please feel free to post a link!

Personally I think there is a good chance of the chip recognising the full 4GB on each module but it is always one of those things until someone tries it.

I have just heard back from GigaByte support that you can install 2x4GB of DDR3 RAM into this board and it will recognise the full 8GB..

Provided screenshot as proof..

I was wondering what specific DDR3 memory was used and if the system was stable.

I tried adding 2+2 GB of DDR2 memory but keep on having BDOS.
Considering that 8GB of DDR3 cost almost the same as 4GB of DDR2 and I could use them again in future if I can install 8 GB of DDR3, so much the better.

You do understand though that you can't mix and match. Only DDR2 or DDR3 can be installed at any one time.
