GA-M56S-S3 rev.1.0 Memory error with 4 sticks

hey. I've narrowed my issue to having 4 sticks in at one time.

RIG :
-amd Antholon 64 x2 Dual core Processor 6000+ 3.10 GHz
-gigabyte GA-m56s-s3 (with Nvidia nfoce 560 rev.1.0 {NOT USING THE ONBOARD VID CARD})
-using onboard sound
-8 gigs of ram - 4 x Samsung 2gb 2rv8 pc2-6400u-666-12-e3
gigabyte nvidia gtx 470 1280mb gddrs pci express 2.0
-windows 7.
-direct x 11

all recent drivers/bios etc.

2 of my ram are from 2008
2 are from 2010

I did a memtest86 and memtest on each separately, works fine no errors.
did it with A 2008 B nothing C 2008 D nothing , and it works fine
did it with A 2010 B nothin C 2010 D nothing, and it works fine
But when I put it to A 2008 B 2008 C 2010 D 2010, OR
A 2008 B 2010 C 2008 D 2010 both tests come up with memory errors and my games crash all the time.

So any clue as to why this may be the case?

could it be my timings?
CPU-Z reports them as 6-6-6-18
however, if I go by the card themselves being pcu-6400u-666-12-e3
You'd think that it should be set up as 6-6-6-12?

What do you guys think?

Would setting my timings manually fix this issue?
What should I set them to?
What about my FSB? should I change it?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

It is quite possible that your problem stems simply from the fact that the modules were purchased with a significant time delay between them and Samsumg may have been using a different silicon quality or something for the two batches.

As for the timings I would have thought that the 6-6-6-18 was more what I would have expected. have you also compensated for the extra load of filling the slots by increasing the memory/FSB voltage a touch?

Right now everything in the bios is set as is.

I am at the point where I'm thinking I should start tweaking to get it right.

What are the chances it is the years that are causing this? I guess the only real way to find out would be to go out and get two new sticks from 2010. And hope it's not from a different month. lol.

So how much should I bump it up from? Not sure what it's set at now? I'm assuming 1.80v, but I can't see that from CPU-Z.
What do you think I should set it at?
Should I set the timings to manual as well?
To what?

I can only find

for voltage settings
which is the FSB setting? or is it somewhere else?

 ddr2 is the memory, correct? how much to increase it by. It only gives my increasing voltage by x amount. it doesn't give me the option to set it to a specific amount.

this is getting to be a pain.

as a side note

I tried running just one slot in each bus.
1. is fine. 2. is fine. 3. errors. 4. errors.

not sure if I get errors because something is actually wrong with 3 and 4 or if you just can't run anything in 3 and 4 by itself.

Looking through the User's Manual for your motherboard the options in BIOS seem pretty limited.  Has the latest BIOS changed the available options? If so can you post a screenshot of the MIT Section of your BIOS?

You should be able to run your RAM in slots 3&4 and the fact that they are failing might point to a problem with the RAM slots on the Motherboard. If they have not been used for a long time they might have gathered some dust and it might be worthwhile trying to clean them out using a very soft paint brush or better still a blast of air.

Sorry to be a pain but what settings are available under the DRAM Configuration heading?

I think if I were faced with your problem the first thing I would do is pull the speed of the RAM back from 800MHz. You can do this by changing the "Set Memory Clock" from AUTO, this should then allow you to alter the setting.

tried lowering it. didn't work

one thing that seemed to do something... I took the CPU clock ratio of auto. and dropped it from 15.5 to 15. So I'm not actually getting 3.1 GHz anymore.

But, for now I seem to be running 2 sticks ok. I'm doing a test with prime 95 to see what I get. I'll leave that running for a bit.

I also had to drop the voltage on my CPU because it was running way too hot 70c. Max casing temp is supposed to be 62c.
After cleaning out my heat sink and dropping the voltage down to 1.3v on my cpu I seem to be getting better temps.

If I can keep this stable and not super hot, I'll then try to see if I can run 4 sticks.
