Cannot install any new device with USB Hub on GA-MA790XT-UD4P Win7 64

I'm almost certain that this is the fault of the mainboard but I cannot get anything which has a USB socket on it to work (my poor Razr keyboard  :'().  Win7 tries in vain to install drivers but no joy (error code 28).  The same devices work fine when connected to my wife's Dell ( ::)) running the same OS.  By a process of elimination I think it's the MOBO.

Here are my specs:

Motherboard: GA-MA790XT-UD4P
Motherboard Chipset: AMD 790X
Motherboard BIOS: Award F7
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 3GHz
Memory: 8GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT
Sound Card: Creative Audigy 4 Pro
Operating system: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

For some reason, when the PC shuts down, some peripherals continue to receive power (the num-lock light stays on on the keyboard as does the power light on the card reader).  Could this be related?  I'm well out of my depth here and going a bit mental so I'd really appreciate some assistance even if it's to let me know I'm barking up the wrong tree (and hopefully which tree to bark up).

Anticipated thanks

Hi there,

Is this a new build or have you had it running for a while?
The Error Code 28 indicates that a driver is missing so have you installed all of the motherboard & hardware drivers?
Have you installed any of the Gigabyte Utilities from the Install CD?
Are your USB device plugged into the USB ports on the motherboard or via a USB hub?

I know, it's all questions and no answers yet!  :D

If you turn off the PC of without disconnecting it from the mains supply then some USB devices can still get power, this is normal and not necessarily an indicator of a problem with the motherboard. Try pulling the power lead from the wall socket after you turn off the PC as this is what I have to do on my system.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Just to check is it a genuine version of the OS ?

Have you tried the USB ports on the back of the motherboard ?

Have you made sure they are enabled in  the BIOS ?

Okay.  Food for thought but have work early doors so will replay when I return.  Thanks very much for the moment.

Right - to answer some of the points above:

It is not a new build, I've had it since Dec '09
It's a custom-build by Cyberpower Systems UK and I found the spec from my order sheet which is as follows:

CPU: AMD Phenom(TM) II X4 945 Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
CD: LG 22X DVD+/-R/+/-RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE DUAL LAYER
FAN: XtremeGear HDT 120 Xtreme CPU Cooler (5 Heatpipes Direct Core Contact, with rubber rings detachable 120m Neon Fan)
FLASHMEDIA: INTERNAL 52in1 Flash Media Reader/Writer
HDD: Single Hard Drive (320GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD)
HDD2: 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16M Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
MOTHERBOARD: GigaByte MA790XT-UD4P AM3 DDR3 790X CrossFire Chipset with Quad PCIE slot SATA RAID MB w/GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394,&7.1Audio
MEMORY: 4GB (2x2GB) PC10666 DDR3/1333mhz Dual Channel Memory (G.SKILL NQ Series w/Heat Spreader)
NETWORK: ONBOARD 10/1000 NETWORK CARD
OS: Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 Professional (64-bit Edition)
POWERSUPPLY: CyberPower 600W Power Supply
USB: Built-in USB 2.0 Ports
VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 16X PCI Express

I have added
4GB of OCZ Gold DDR3 RAM
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4 Pro soundcard

I overclocked the CPU to around 3.3GHz and overclocked the graphics card (but I forget by how much now).  The RAM is not overclocked.

The mobo drivers were already up and running when I received the machine and so far as I know they are up to date. I have not installed any Gigabyte utilities (and I probably can't remember where the CD's are so would need to download any utilities).

None of the USB sockets (front or back) will allow any hub to be connected (always getting a Code 28 error in windows).  The rear sockets have two WD 1TB external HD's attached (which work fine), a Digidesign Mbox (again, no problems), a Logitech wireless mouse receiver and an Xbox wireless receiver.  There's spare USB back there too.
On the front, I use the two sockets generally for mp3 player, pen-drives etc with no issues.

:D The OS is genuine and up to date

Re: enabling in BIOS - erm ...?  I think so but I'm pretty much a newbie so I could easily have got it wrong or missed something.

The problem came to light when I first got my Razr Reclusa keyboard, which always worked during POST and up to the point that Windows started (as in the backlight on the keys was on) but from the login screen onwards, no joy.  As a result, I assumed it was a driver issue and tried to troubleshoot, boot in safe mode, manually install the driver etc, checked it wasn't a 32/64-bit issue.  I went onto the Microsoft Answers website and had a bit of a rant (it's a Microsoft branded keyboard which didn't work with a Microsoft OS and I was quite frustrated).  Nothing worked so I packed it away and was going to return it to the retailer.  Then, for unrelated reasons, I had to do a reinstall of my OS and woo-hoo! it worked.
About a week later, I left the machine on overnight and when I returned the keys were dark and there was no num lock light on.  On reboot I was back to square one.
I assumed during this period that it was the keyboard at fault but when messing with the drivers it seemed to mention an unrecognised USB hub (the keyboard has a couple of pointless USB 1.1 sockets on it).  This raised my suspicions so I tried plugging in the [don't laugh] R2D2 USB hub my sister gave me and lo and behold, same error and lack of driver.

So, this is suspicion and supposition on my part but the fact that the keyboard works fine on my wife's computer (same OS), as does the hub, kind of lets Microsoft off the hook.  As the fault reoccurred after the machine had been on for a prolonged period I guessed it was some power issue with the mainboard.  I tried to see if the USB controller on the mobo was updatable, assuming it was made by a 3rd party but I was soon out of my depth so gave upon that.

The power settings I use in Windows are 'Always On' btw.  I don't trust that sleeping stuff.

I don't actually need a USB in particular but the keyboard issue REALLY bugs me and I'd love to get it sorted.

Again, anticipated thanks and thanks for replying above and taking an interest, you guys.

Razer Reclusa is not officially supported by Win7 64. The installation of it probably caused the Code 28 error. Many Code 28 errors are caused by attempting to install the wrong drivers for a device.

Razer Reclusa
System Requirements
Windows XP / X64 / MCE 2005

1) GA-Z97X-Gaming 7, G3258,
2) GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 1.1, FX-8350
3) GA-AM1M-S2P, Sempron 3850 Kabini

Hi. I've got a Win7 driver for said keyboard but it's a moot point as I can't install ANY usb hub (same error codes). I'm pretty sure that generic usb hubs have Win7 64 drivers available and they won't work so I reckon it's more complicated that that, I'm afraid.

Have you disabled all the power saving modes in the BIOS as well as Windows?

Well I take it that you know how to get to the screensaver dialogue box in Windows. From there you will notice a box at the bottom which is titled Power Management. It has a Change Power Settings button. From htere you can select the High Performance power plan and that will stop Windows going to sleep or hibernating etc.

In the BIOS you just go the the Power Management page and disable anything there to do with sleep or hibernation. Also in the MIT section disable C1E, EIST, C3 etc.

Hi,
I will throw out this for you all to "Chew on"..  When he lost the lites to his keyboard overnight makes me think his power supply standby
voltage may have been lost..I don't know but perhaps 600w may be a bit light for his system..
Anyway food for thought..
good luck
