GA-890GPA-UD3H: Can't boot with 4GB RAM
« on: January 19, 2011, 01:30:59 pm »
For some reason whenever I put in 2x 2GB RAM I get (according to user's manual) "Continuous long beeps: Graphics card not inserted properly".
System works fine with 1x 2GB, and I've tested both RAM chips in all the slots and they work as long as I don't both both in at the same time.
Anyone got any idea what might be wrong?

My system is:
GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T cpu
Corsair 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz
Radeon HD6850 1GB GDDR5
Win7 Home Premium x64

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

no answer but a few questions I'm afraid:

Which revision is your motherboard?
What BIOS version are you running?
Apart from the hardware you have mentioned what other devices do you have on your system?

Motherboard is 2.1

BIOS is 6.00PC (if that is correct, only checked it at startup)

Other hardware is:
Crucial SSD 128GB
Corsair HX 750W PSU
and a couple older harddrives and some DVD-rom.

That's about it really

Hi,

You need to check which BIOS version you are running as the info you have posted isn't what we need.

You can do this by checking the initial POST screen, if you have disabled the Gigabyte Logo on start-up or by going into BIOS and pressing the F9 key.

On your motherboard it should be two letters such as FC, FD, FE. The latest BIOS version for your motherboard is actually FF and if you are not running this version then I would recommend that you update to it using the QFlash utility. You can download the latest BIOS from here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3516&dl=1#bios and if you are not sure how to flash BIOS using the QFlash Utility then check here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html

It was FD. I'll upgrade to FF if that'll help.

It may help and having the latest BIOS gives us a base to move forward from.
Use QFlash to Update BIOS and remember to disable the Keep DMI Data option as this will also help give you a clean starting point to work from.

Tried updating BIOS, but got "BIOS ID check error" in QFlash.

You may need to go to FE or FGA BIOS first.

Also check that your motherboard is revision 2.1 as it would say that if your motherboard is different to the Rev 2.1 link I provided above.

If you still have a problem with it try flashing the Backup BIOS over to the Main BIOS first.

Managed to find out what the problem was *phew*  :)

Had a couple extra mounting screws in the wrong places beneath the motherboard.
Was just randomly browsing some other support threads and saw that it might cause problems and I thought I remembered not removing them all.

But thanks for the quick replies  :) this is probably the last time I build my own pc, always some problems that shows up o_o;

Ah, those pesky motherboard mountings. They're easy things to miss and cause a LOT of problems but don't let it put you off building another PC. That's part of the fun and also you always get much more for your money than you would if you get a pre-built system.

Also when you build your own system you know it all much better and even if you have a few problems along the way that can be good because it makes you delve even deeper into the workings of your machine.

Well since I just bought and built this system the next one is probably some years away, so I might forget or change my mind.  ;D
