Gigabye HD5850 RMA?

Gigabye HD5850 RMA?
« on: December 18, 2010, 12:25:58 pm »
Hello, about 3-4 weeks ago I had some problems with my Gigabyte HD5850 (reference design), the core and memory clocks would be 710/900 respectively when the default core and memory clock for HD5850's is 725/1000, I sent it to the E-tailer I brought it from and they tested the card and said they couldn't find the fault, So they decided to send it to Gigabye for further testing. After about a week I received my card back in the post and was told the card had been repaired.

Sure enough when I installed the card and booted into windows the core and memory speeds were as they should be (725/1000) which was great news. After about 2 weeks use I received a Bluescreen during a run of the benchmark 3DMark11, I thought this might be because of my CPU's (Core i7 920) overclock, so I ran a CPU stress test program called OCCT, after about 25 minutes I received a second bluescreen, At this time I was pretty sure my CPU was the cause of the bluescreens...

However after returning my CPU back to stock speeds and setting my RAM to run at its rated values I was still getting bluescreens. I decided to check GPU-Z to make sure my graphics cards were running as they should....Here is what I found.

http://s676.photobucket.com/albums/vv125/iNoXious/?action=view&current=GPU-z1.jpg   PowerColor HD5850 on the Left and Gigabye HD5850 on the right, as you can see the gigabyte card is running at 2500Mhz Core, has 4 ROPS, No Shader units ETC.... Haven't had a bluescreen since removing the gigabyte card..Your opinions?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The first question is what did the technician do to the card to fix it when it was sent to Gigabyte?

Has the firmware been updated?

Are you running the latest version of GPU-Z ?

No idea what the technician did, I did ask someone at overclock.co.uk (place where I brought the graphics card) what had been done to fix it and overclock.co.uk said gigabyte didn't say what they did...
No idea if the firmware has been updated, EDIT: I used GPU-Z version 0.4.8 before, Just realised there's now a GPU-Z 0.4.9 out, although the HD5850 graphics cards have been supported by GPU-Z for along time now.

Thanks for your reply.

Although the 5850 card has been supported by the GPU-Z older version if they updated the firmware it could cause problems with the correct reporting of details.

I understand what your saying, however GPU-Z 0.4.8 had no problem with my PowerColor HD5850 as you can see Via the screenshots, Both cards are reference design and even have the same BIOS Version. Having said that I will be testing the card in a friends PC tomorrow and see what happens.

Obviously the more data you can accumulate the better the chance of discovering the problem. It may just be a faulty card but there again as the manufacturer has "repaired" it there shouldn't be any problems. I just wish they would give more information on what they have done.

Yeah I'd much rather test it in another PC and know for sure that the problem lies with the card rather than send it to gigabyte to be told there no fault.
My guess is they flashed the BIOS to restore the clocks, but I have a feeling the problem is more hardware related rather than software/firmware.

Thanks for your help so far, I posted a RMA thing with ggts.gigabye.com.tw 2 days ago but haven't got a reply yet. I know these things take along time, took over a month to get a reply from Coolermaster when I had a faulty PSU  :(

Normally GGTS take between a week and ten days to answer depending on how busy they are. It has been known to be only a couple of days but that is more unusual.  ;)
