DEAD GA-H55M-UD2H ?
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:01:41 pm »
A couple of days ago my pc shutdown unexpected and would not start back up.  I done all the usual things, took battery out to clear cmos, tested components one at a time, even tried a different cpu and still couldn't get it to power up.  I also jump started the PSU and that worked fine, so I can only assume it's my board that has gone.  I have noticed if I unplug it from the mains and turn off the PSU for a min or two, then plug it back in and turn on it powers up my fans for a split second and then does nothing - if that means anything to anyone?

Anyone else heard/had a similar problem to this on the same board?

Well I would suggest building it up outside the case.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or use the motherboard box that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard.

Add the keyboard and now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot.

The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps.

Please post what sounds it makes.

It's not shorting out, it's been running fine until recently.  It doesn't have an internal speaker not that it would do anything as the board doesn't seem to be getting any power.  Normally if a component fails one of the warning LED's on the board will light up and I'm not even getting that.

My pc had been locking up recently and the only way to turn it off was to flick the switch on the PSU.  I'm not sure if that's a sign of anything to do with the board about to fail?

The other thing is to try a new PSU and see if that makes any difference. You have to start somewhere  and give yourself a datum to work from.

Tried another PSU already and it done the exact same thing.  I might try and put it together outside the case as you suggested, just incase there is something I'm over looking.

The thing is building it outside the case makes it easier to check and get at components and there is no chances of a short or anything like that.
At least you have a good known starting point and can work from there.

Update:  tested everything outside of case and still got nothing.  RMA'd it back to the supplier (overclockers.co.uk) and I guess it was faulty, as I've just got e-mail confirmation that they've dispatched me a replacement.  Scary thing is, I've just been told by a friend about an issue with 1156 boards with Foxconn sockets not making proper contact with the CPU and killing the motherboard and CPU.  Will be checking my CPU when I get home to make sure it was making proper contact with the socket.  I would hope this is not what killed it, as the articles I've been reading were from 2009 and this design fault would have been sorted by now, unless I had an older rev board.

Generally once the CPU is mounted securely in the socket it is seldom that there is any problem with the contacts. It is usually if the installer is a little heavy handed or not carefull that there is an issue.
