GA-X58-USB3 - Cannot POST.

Hi,

I just recently got a GA-X58-USB3 Motherboard and I can't get it to POST.

When it gets power there are 6 Phase LEDs that light up.  The two Top are Red, two middle Yellow, two Bottom Green.
I've tried looking at the manual that came with the Motherboard but I cannot find anything about the Phase LEDs.

I have the following:
Intel Core i7 950
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GBs)
Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB HDD
OCZ Agility II SSD
VisionTek Radeon HD 6870

I can get the PC to turn on.  The Fans run and everything, but it doesn't seem to POST.  It stays with the 6 Phase LEDs lit and no signal is sent to the Monitor.  Does it matter that I'm using the HDMI Cable instead of the DVI Cable?  I've tried both.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly you have neglected to mention what make/model of PSU you are using.

Secondly have you inserted the 12v 8pin EPS plug near the CPU ?

My Power Supply is hec X-Power Pro 650 650W Continuous @ 40°C ATX 12V v2.2 / EPS 12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply.

And yes, I have inserted the 8 PIN power connector for the CPU and the 24 PIN Power Connector for the Motherboard.

OK. I take it that the SSD is the boot drive and connected to SATA2_0. Make sure that you have set it to AHCI mode. The WD Green which I presume is for data storage can go on the same controller if you want it to. The optical drive you should put on a different controller and set it to IDE mode.

Those assumptions would be correct.

I believe what you're saying would be one of my mistakes.  I had the Optical Drive and the SSD plugged into the same controller.  Now I have all three in different controllers (Assuming each node of two is a different controller correct?)

You said to set the SSD and the Optical Drive to different modes though... How would I do this if I can't get a signal to go to the monitor?  I checked the Drives and did not see any physical settings for them.

By the way, I have an LG DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model GH24NS50.  I hope that can give you some more insight.

Also, would it be possible to explain what the different Phase LED lights mean?

On your motherboard, I didn't realise until I just checked but, you only have the one controller so it wouldn't be possible to split the drives up anyway. If your optical drive is a SATA drive then it probably won't make any difference anyway. You can always check by unplugging it for a while.

The phase lights are explained in the manual along with all the other LEDs. It is all to do with loadings.

I still have the feeling that your PSU is the root of the problem and not really powerfull enough especially with a split output.

You really think its the PSU?  Even when I have the Video Card unplugged, it still won't POST.  Also, wouldn't it simply not turn on if it was an issue with the PSU?

Would there happen to be anything else that could possibly be the issue?

I also cannot find a section in the Manual about the LEDs.  That's the only reason I asked.

Yes there are always other things to be fair. Computers are complicated beasts!
If you want to be sure we must start at the beginning.

The next thing is to remove the motherboard form the case and test it on the workbench.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or use the motherboard box that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard.

Add the keyboard and now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot.

The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps.

Please post what sounds it makes.

Ok, so before I go ahead and do this, just so I understand...

When I put everything on the worktop, am I just plugging in the 24 pin Connector from the PSU into the Motherboard with nothing installed onto the Motherboard?

Well you will have the memory module and buzzer but that is about it. Don't forget the 12v power plug as well.

What do you mean by Buzzer?

Also, would it help to say that when I power it on, it doesn't make any sound at all?

Did I forget to install something and is that why there is no sound?

Ah, yes you could say that.  The buzzer is a little solid state piezo electric device that took the place of the old fashioned speaker. It plugs onto a four pin conector on the bottom right hand side of the motherboard  where it is marked Front Panel Connectors. The actual pins are marked SPKR. If you haven't got one they are available in any computer shop for a matter of pence.

Ok, I've installed the buzzer.  I still have everything in my case at the moment, but I figured you may want to know this information as it may tell you something different...

When I hit the power switch the Buzzer beeps for 5 seconds and then stops for 2 seconds... Then beeps for another 5 seconds... It keeps repeating that.  Any ideas?

Well I would suggest following my earlier advicxe and remove the motherboard etc from the case  as it could be the sign of a short.

Ok, so to recap... Remove everything from the case and put it on the Worktop.  What should still be installed on the Motherboard will be 1 Stick of RAM and the 24 Pin Connector from the PSU and the 8 Pin connector for the CPU?  And also plug the Keyboard in?  Is this correct?
