New Board advice

After carefull consideration I`ve decided to get a new board as cant do much more with my old 1.

PC Spec
VGA Brand : Nvidia      Model : geforce gts450
CPU Brand : AMD      Model : phemon(tm) II x2 545 processor       Speed : 3.01ghz
Operation System : Win 7 64-bit      SP :
Memory Brand : Corsair      Type : DDRII
Memory Size : 4.00      Speed : 800mhz
PSU 600w

AS cost is an issue I thought the following board would do the job
GA-880GM-UD2H (rev 1.4 ) £57 inc vat.

Now I`m not too sure if my PSU is right for the job as it states the board requires
1 x 24-pin Atx main power connector
1 x 8-pin atx 12v power connector

if this spec is correct:

then your PSU has the needed 8 pin connector. If not, you should be able to buy a 4 Pin to 8 Pin converter from somewhere like Maplin. I got this one from them http://www.maplin.co.uk/8-pin-12v-to-4-pin-power-cable-99521 it connects to a 4 pin molex and although I don't use it now it has saved my bacon more a few times.

As far as RAM goes, if I were buying I would probably go for something like this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-(2x2gb)-corsair-vengeance-ddr3-pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-150v Although it is rated at 1600MHz it will automatically be down clocked to 1333MHz but it will give you some leeway if you decide to overclock.

Just 1 other thing, on checking the cpu support list and bios download I should be able to just fit my Phenon without updating the bios is that correct.

Yes you should be able to run the CPU without updating BIOS but that is just so long as you are sold a 1.4 revision.

If it is not a 1.4 board you should still be OK, but you would need BIOS F5 or later. As the C2 stepping version of your CPU is recognised by the F2 BIOS you would probably be able to update the BIOS with your own CPU even if it is the newer C3 version and not officially supported until F5 BIOS.

The above information is based on you having the newer C3 Stepping version of the Phenom ii X2 545 Processor.

if you use something like CPUZ from here: http://www.cpuid.com/ it should tell you. If you have purchased the CPU recently I would assume it is the C3 stepping.

DL Cpu-Z  shows stepping 2 socket AM3 (938)
I`m just worried that if I get a board and end in the state I`m in with my old brd( didnt get a reply from Runn32)
Not being able too boot.

Hi again,

as your CPU is showing as being the C2 Stepping Version then you won't have a problem with the new motherboard whichever revision you get hold of, so you don't need to worry on that score.

I know runn3R has been very busy recently and I also  know he had well over 300 e-mails and PM's to get through when I last heard from him, so this is probably why you haven't heard from him yet.
