GTX 260 in PCIEx16 slot but only at x2

GTX 260 in PCIEx16 slot but only at x2
« on: February 25, 2011, 11:36:18 pm »
Hi everyone.

OK my rig:
-mobo Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H v1.0 AM2+
-AMD x4 640 3ghz AM3
-3gb ram (2x1gb kingmax and 1x1gb kingston) ddr2 800mhz
-nvidia GTX 260 192 shaders 448bit
-PSU Chieftec APS 550W (25A on both +12v v1 and v2)

Nothing is overclocked. I updated BIOS to latest "F9E" version. ITs beta BIOS. Only this version support CPU AMD x4 640.
Everything is ok except GTX 260 is running at x2 in PCIE slot and performance is very poor.

Why only x2? Why not full x16? Card is in proper x16 slot.

I already made BIOS reset, also disabled internal graphics and sound. STill nothing. PCIE is still x2.

Any idea, any help?

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The first question would have to be is the card inserted into the correct slot ie the top one?

Have you made sure that all the power cables are attached ?

Yes card is in proper x16 slot. All cables are plugged in.

F9E beta BIOS is the latest. According to this website.
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2800#bios

Its "Beta" BIOS so maybe this is the problem?

Hi there,

It could be a problem with the BIOS and the best way to check would be if you have access to an older Graphic Card so you can see if the slot will work at X16 rather than its current X2.

What other hardware have you got installed in your system? Are you using any of the other PCIe slots for example?

@absic
I dont have any other gfx card :(.
My mobo has two PCIe slots one @x16 second @x4. I checked gfx in both and still it shows only x2 :(.

Except HW i mentioned in first post i have also:
-1 HDD SATA 250gb WDC
-1 HDD SATA 500gb Samsung
-LG DVD recorder

MY PC is running on windows 7 32bit.

As the GTX 260 is quite a high end GFX I too would suspect that the problem is with the BIOS not actually recognising the card which is why was hoping that you could test the slot with a different GFX. It was really just as a test to see if the slot is working OK with a lower end card.

Sadly, as users, we have no control over the BIOS releases and it is only by informing Gigabyte of a problem, when these things come to light, that they can be resolved.

My best advice would be to contact GGTS here: http://ggts.gigabyte.com/tech.asp?ClassID=2&Country=Poland&SourceWeb=B2C (the link is for Gigabyte Support in Poland) by filling the form and seeing if they are aware of a problem. Sometimes they have a newer BIOS update that they can forward to you in an effort to resolve such issues or offer other advice to help you out.
