usb mouse choppy on h55n-usb3
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:27:12 pm »
Hi,

I have an H55N-USB-3 motherboard with i5 cpu on a 400W power supply.

I have all gigabyte drivers installed on win7 64, the only thing I changed in the BIOS was setting storage type to AHCI.

My mouse (MS IntelliMouse 3.0) gets very choppy or freezes occasionally. I see this mostly when either the processor's busy, the hard drive is active or read/write to USB stick.

I tried other mice, plugging the mouse in different USB ports, it still keeps happening.

When I plug the mouse in the PS2 port, it works perfectly, but I would like to have the mouse onUSB.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Thanks-
-lajos

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

This is something that tends to happen usually to the Microsoft mice. I am not really sure why they should be more suseptable to it than others.

How much memory do you have installed ?

In fact possibly you could list your hardware so we can see what is running.

Thanks so much for your reply!

Shoot, both of the mice I tried were Microsoft ;)

Here's my build:

Gigabyte H55N-USB3
Intel i5 750 cpu
8 gb ram
120gb ocz vertex 2 ssd
Zotac Nvidia gt-240 gfx 1gb card
Silverstone case w/400 watt power supply

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

The mice I tried:

MS intellimouse explorer 3.0 (this works no problem in ps/2 port, glitches on usb)
MS wireless mobile mouse 3500

Both mice glitch about the same amount over USB.

Well the fact that it works on the PS2 port but plays up on the USB reinforces what I suspected really. I would be inclined to try and borrow a friends mouse (not Micro$oft) and see if that works better before buying a new one.

The only thing I noticed from your list is that you have filled all your memory slots. Have you input the memory settings and voltages manually ?

I haven't changed any memory settings in the bios. Should I?

Other than the USB mouse acting up, I don't experience any other issues.
The computer's running really well, faster than my other intel quad core machine.

I will try it with another mouse, although I would really miss my MS mouse ;)

I asked about the memory because I take it that you have all the slots filled and normally in that situation the system won't be stable under auto settings. You usually need to compensate for the extra loading onthe memory controller with a bit more voltage etc.

Yes, I do have both memory slots filled, with these chips (2x4gb):

http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=225

9-9-9-24-2N
Voltage: 1.5

I set the voltage to a higher value now (1.568) and performance enhance to extreme.

I looked at the timing settings, but there are so many values, I don't even know where to start ;)
Do you have any suggestions?

I forgot that this board only has two slots anyway so no problem. You will probably find that it will run fine on auto settings.

Thanks for the help.

Setting memory performance to extreme actually made the mouse work much better.
I don't really understand why that would make a difference, but it definitely helped ;)
