Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1 vs. MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX
« on: April 06, 2011, 01:11:23 am »
Hi everyone!

Just wanted to ask for opinions on these two boards:

Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1

MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX

I purchased the Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1 vs. some months ago along with the AMD 1055T as a combo and they are presently working flawlessly!  So I have not complaints whatsoever!

Today, I found a super deal on this MSI Mobo: MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX

I am curious, have you any thoughts on these two mobos?

I found the MSI today on sale for $139...and it seems like a very good deal.

How does it do compared to the Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1 that is working so nice for me now?

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

Soar

Whoops,

I forgot to ask also about a comparision between the MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX and the GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD7 and the GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5.

Any suggestions?

Hi Soar,

sorry, I can't give you a decent answer as I haven't compared the two boards but MSI have a good reputation and, for the price you can get it at I would be very tempted, if only to try it out!

There is a good review of the MSI 890FXA-GD70 here: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/msi_890fxa-gd70_review/1 that is worth reading.

Absic,

Thank you for your reply.  Long time no talk!  How are you?

All is well here...been playing around with sandybridge and it's been fun.

Thanks for the link to the review on this MOBO.  It was very thorough!

Any idea when mr. bulldozer will show up and would it work on this MOBO?  According to some people, they are saying this MSI board will accept the new Bulldozer Processer due to be released very soon.  I found this information here:

http://event.msi.com/mb/am3+/

Finally, would see much of a difference if I switched out the Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1 for this new MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX?

It's me,

Soar

PS the Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 v.1 with the 1055T is working absolutely perfect!  Thanks for making all this possible.  I could not have done it without you guys here.

Have a great day!

Hi Soar,

yes, I had noticed that, once again, you have returned to the darkside. The lure of DM is very tempting but you must learn to resist.  :D

Still no confirmed date for bulldozer but hopefully some time in June/early July. Gigabyte are already producing motherboards with the AM3+ socket which is a good indicator that the CPU's will be coming along within a couple of months.

Whilst it does appear that certain motherboard manufacturers are offering a BIOS update to enable some existing AM3 socket boards to take the Bulldozer chip, you should bear in mind that they are not telling you the whole picture.

Running one of the new AM3+ processors on an older socket will mean you will lose some of the features of the new chip which, to my mind, defeats the point of getting one in the first place. However, apart from better temperature reporting, it is not clear what, if any, other features will be lost if you use an AM3 socket.

Personally, I wouldn't be spending any money unnecessarily on a new motherboard, at the moment, unless it definitely had an AM3+ socket. It's that period of time when it is really getting too close to the release of the new CPU to rashly spend money but the lack of info is still quite amazing which makes such offers very tempting.

A good deal of AM3 MSI boards is poor quality. This one, as loaded with features as it is, seems to be one of the problematic ones.

Even though it's "high end" it's still a 4+1 phase design. Whatever MSI's marketing is saying about their DrMOS, it's not working here.

It won't be an issue if you're not overclocking but a 6 core overclocked will possibly smoke these mosfets.

They're a little too extreme in their views here but:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/943109-why-vrms-big-issue-why-choose.html

It's a good thread to check for mosfet failures, though. Problem being that this MSI board is brought up 4 times in the list.

Very shocking information and post!  MOSFET's giving up the ghost and dying and capacitors exploding?

That was strong enough to make my knees shake.  I also had to change my pants! Then I needed to sip on a large glass of wine and listen to three hours of quiet soothing classical music to recover my inner peace!

I have decided to sell this MSI Mobo on Ebay or Craigslist and stay with Gigabyte!

No wonder there are no MSI owners in heaven!  Their mobo's weren't good enough!

It is much better to be educated than to continue  on in ignorance!

Thanks,

Soar

All joking aside,

A big thank you to all here!  I was seriously considering upgrading to the MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX until bytheway'er showed the link describing the terrible problems with that board.

I received the MSI mobo today and I have decided to sell it immediately on Ebay.  According to that post, it does just fine if people do not take it to extreme levels of over clocking.

Thanks again everyone! ;D

PS I was only joking  about Kiss, Deep Purple, etc.  Most of that type of music drives me nutty!  :o
