5870 flickering nightmare!!
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:55:29 pm »
Right so my newly aquired 5870 has been giving me some grief. Whenever doing something basic for example browsing the web, it would constantly flicker. 3dmark + games etc were fine.
Found out it was because ATI have been clocking their cards memory too low when it comes to "2d mode"
This problem can be solved by manually setting your clocks in rivatuner. However rivertuner would not reconise my card.
I had to do this --> http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=3534389&postcount=151 which then allowed rivertuner to see my card, then manually set my clocks.

Not sure if this has been covered before but hopefully this will save someone a few hours of pain.

Anywho best crack on with some gaming now :P

My cards are clocked at 157/300 in 2D mode.
850/1200  in 3D mode.  I havent noticed any flickering  as you say.

A lot of people have issues with different drivers for these cards. Read the AMD game forums.

I'm having huge success with the 11.4a hotfix drivers. These are preview drivers.
Try some different drivers.Maybe this will help.

Since you just got this card, have you checked if your PSU has enough power to run it?

This has been the cause of many problems.

Good luck. These cards are very good. ;)

PSU is fine, ran my 8800gtx no probs, this is lower wattage than 8800gtx. Like I said the runs 3d mode fine was only when in 2d mode. Using rivatuner I set the clocks manually so it runs 850/1200 all the time and ive not had any problems since.

They are good cards + ive been majorly impressed with mine so far. Just a shame the drivers are a tad iffy :P Will try the hotfix drivers when they get an official release. At the moment i'm happy with it running 850/1200 all the time as its gaming machine anyway.

Downclocking on cards can cause problems at times. I've forced a bigger than stock underclock on my 4870x2 and I've experienced corrupt 3d mode twice now. Seems like rarely VRAM chips choke when jumping clocks ( restarting the application fixes this ).

I'd guess that problems with stock settings may happen if your chips, be it core or VRAM, just don't like the low clocks. Same goes for my card as I've heard of people running even lower idle clocks with no issues at all.
