Bulldozer Confirmation

Bulldozer Confirmation
« on: March 30, 2011, 06:46:09 pm »
Just got off the phone with Gigabyte Technical Support.  I have a GA 890FX UDP5 Board Rev 2.1. less than 3 months old. They have confirmed that there will not be a bios update for rev 2.0 and 2.1. nor do they have an upgrade or trade-in program. I guess I will sell my board on ebay, accept the $ loss, and purchase a new ASUS AM3+ Board.

Erm... and what were you expecting, really? Anyway, at the moment there are no AM3+ boards out there. All the "bios update AM3+ compatible" hype is nothing more than a rumor. There's no way to tell if that would work and to what degree. For the record, AMD is not supporting this either.

If you think Asus would do more in this situation than Gigabyte, go ahead but I don't see it.

Gigabyte seem to be producing some AM3+ Motherboards, although they are only revisions of existing boards. Check this thread: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,4819.0.html

Somehow I doubt they're anywhere close to what real AM3+ boards will be. Let's face it, these at best have an AM3+ socket or, at worst, just a bios update.

We have to wait for the new chipset to really talk about AM3+ motherboards.

Both ASUS and Gigabyte already have AM3+ boards for retail purchase. The difference is that ASUS will offer a Bios update for some current AM3  boards that  are not AM3+ Compatible. It is possible to update the bios for compatibility however it may result in reduced functionality compared to a true AM3+  socket. If Asus is able and willing to do this why won't Gigabyte.

Look I'm not trying to bad mouth Gigabyte, Ive always had good results with thier boards. When I bought my last 890 board I was torn between Gigabyte and Asus. If gigabyte is going to force me to buy another board to be compatible with AM3+ then I wil go with ASUS next time around.

I'll wait till someone tries to run a BD chip on an AM3 mobo. At the moment there's a lot of speculation and very little actual info on whether or not it'll all work even remotely well.

After reading a few posts of those threads linked I have to say that some people have rather strange ideas. I don't see BD CPUs requiring more power than Thubans to run. That'd be a failure of epic proportions considering power consumption of SB.

Hey gigabyte developers, engineers or what else... My board is 3 months.. I can't buy another (890FXA UD5 Rev2.1) Both Asus and MSI said their boards will support bulldozer... Why did I choose gigabyte? We're waiting good news, I hope...

If not; I'll never buy any gigabyte product again. This is my 2nd PC and previous board was gigabyte too..
