CMX6GX3M3A1333C9 overclocked need a cooler?
« on: April 13, 2011, 01:43:01 pm »
iv been searching the net trying to find out if my XMS3 memory (CMX6GX3M3A1333C9) needs an airflow fan when OC to 1600mhz 9-9-9-24
having no luck searching myself i thought id ask here

My question is does it need one and also whats the max safe temps my sticks can handle

oh and i already own a corsair airflow unit however it sounds like a jet engine does anyone know of any good 60mm fans i can put in?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Your memory modules should be fine when running at 1600 Mhz without a dedicated fan to cool them as long as the cooling in your case is adequate.

I have to agree with DM on this one. I am running Corsair Dominator at 1600 MHz on my system without dedicated cooling. I also had to remove the extra cooling fins from the tops of my modules to accommodate the CPU cooler I use and the RAM temps have always been OK.

I am watercooling my system and so don't use excessive case fans to move air around and my 1600 Mhz Dominators only run at around 40 degrees under load. 8)

I have similar memory as you Alundran, expect mine is the "DDR3 12800C9" (1600mhz), I'm putting 1.68v (in bios) through them. They get warm at times. As you're only oc'ing from 1333mhz -> 1600mhz I would not have thought you would need any addn'l cooling (as DM + absic have said)
Just make sure you have a good airflow through your case.

DDR3 isn't too bad with temps thanks to lower voltage. Considering that I've spent a good several hours moving cables, fans and adding a fan controler I can just as well share my idle temps on my stick closest to the CPU heatsink.

With good airflow but fans at about 60-75% RAM heatsink that has close to 0 airflow thanks to big CPU cooling is running 34C at idle. Mosfets are actually 1 degree worse.

All that with 1.73v on OCZ Platinum overvolted from 1.65v.

yes that sounds about what I would have expected bytheway_r. Mine run at about 35-36 degrees but I don't have a lot of case cooling because I use watercooling for everything.

1.68 volts seems way too much to me mine are overclocked to 1600mhz with 1.5 volts and 10 passes of memtest without a problem

Yes but he might have all his banks filled and so would need to increase the voltage to compensate.

They're rated at 1.65, but had to choose either 1.68 or 1.59 or something, iirc correctly I anything lower than 1.68 gave me problems.

By banks you mean slots right?
mine are all full.
out of curiosity why would you need extra volts to compensate?
