vmware wont recognize my 64 bit amd

hello all (first time post)

very recently i built a GA-890FXA-UD5   with a Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Thuban processor.

when i run a  "Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility"  from vmware, i get this love-note:

"This host is NOT capable of running a 64-bit guest operating system under this VMware product."


yes, viritualization is enabled in the bios.  i even reloaded 64-bit win-7 thinking that maybe bios-viritualization had to be enabled before the OSinstall is even started (nope).

any other ideas?   the specs say the processor does indeed support viritualization (and again, its enabled in the bios)

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I work on the Intel side of the forum but I looked into this a while ago for another member and found that a lot of the boards only support VT-x not VT-D. This was the answer I received from tech support:

Currently our xxx series motherboards do not support VT-D. They support  Virtualization Technology (VT-x) now (bios option "Virtualization Technology") which is different from VT-D (Virtualization for Directed I/O). But we can prepare special bios on customer's request. It usually takes a few weeks. The request can be applied by GGTS for instance for the particular MB model.

Interesting.   most forums i post to either tell me i am a newbie that should not be using a computer, or the forum threads go unanswered.

but this is the first forum where anybody ever offered to write a special bios just for me!


i suppose this is a silly question (remember, i am a newbie)  but....  would i run into any other issues with a custom bios?    i have flashed many a bios in my day, but its always been one right from the website.

FYI - this is gigabyte mobo #6 for me.  the first one was an AMD, the other four were intel, but i decided to switch back to AMD on this latest one!   all are still working, but i seem to keep outgrowing them (or just look for excuses to replace them with the latest 'n greatest)

Hi Mark

The custom BIOS would be similar to an ordinary BIOS but with the necessary changes made to the code. As far as you could see it would seem to be the same file but with a different name and would be applied in a similar fashion.

Nothing is too much trouble for Gigabyte!

I don't know much about VMware but I have the rev 2.1 version of this motherboard along with a 1090T processor and I have been able to run Virtualization with Windows 7.

What VMware product are you trying to use? If you let me know , I can get hold of a copy and can try it out on my system to see if there is something else going on. The more info available for Gigabyte Tech support the better.

Why are you running the Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility? Is it because you don't know if your CPU is 64-bit compatible? I would skip that step and move on. The processor check program is out-of-date, but may be useful on some other CPU models.

i am running this test because it seemed like a wonderful starting point to try and determine why VMware didn't want to install properly !

regarding virtualization, i am really extremely new at this.   i was able to get it working once on an xp box but it was so slow i decided to wait until i had a REAL computer to play with.    i tried the "server"

but this didnt install - i probably should try it again, since i reloaded win-7 AFTER doing the virtualization-enable in the bios (grasping at straws)

but some forums recommended the "player" instead:

note - nobody has ever offered to customize a bios for me, EVER.  this sorta made my day!

**UPDATE***   that suggestion about skipping the 64-bit test was correct!  it turns out my install of VMware was working all along.

Hi,

Just checking out the link you posted and the VMware 64 bit Processor Compatibility check tool is actually quite dated now (released 29/11/2005) so I am not surprised that it didn't recognise the Phenom ii processor.
