Crashing and freezing on Gigabyte's GTX 580 Ultra Durable

Crashing and freezing on Gigabyte's GTX 580 Ultra Durable
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:36:02 pm »
I own both of these cards, one card worked fine and the other one will either crash or freeze on me while playing games. Its a similar issue with this card as well stated in this topic:

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,5008.0.html

Will Gigabyte also release a BIOS to fix this issue?

Yes I already reported the problem to GGTS but they replied with this:

Dear John,

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, please first confirm if the application or game support 3D mode and does it requires any other requirements. And we also suggest you to contact to the application if they have update to fix this kind of error.

If you still have any further question or suggestion about our products/service, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will try our best to help you resolve the problem ASAP.

Regards,
GIGABYTE

Not very helpful, its the card thats at fault, not the software.

How are you sure it is the card and not the software ? I have seen very many problems like this fixed by a patch.

Even if it is the card , don't give up so easilly.  Reply to their reply and state your case again and ask for someone more technical to look into it. Often if you push a bit you will get a better answer.

Running DX10/11 games like Bad Company 2, Lost Planet 2, original Crysis will crash on me within 10 minutes of gameplay, and it either freezes, or I get the NVIDIA driver has recovered message. Running 3dMark11 will fail as well, it will not go past the first demo and benchmark tests will fail as well.

It only happens with the second GTX 580 I bought, my first GTX 580 runs perfectly.

Fair enough. I take it that you have checked the tempertures especially on the second card when it fails ?

Both my cards run between 60-70C at full load, so its not that high.

Well that rules that out as the cause of the problem then. :-\

What PSU is powering your system ?

First I had an AeroCool 1000 watt PSU, I thought that wasn't enough so I changed to a Corsair AX-1200 watt and the crashing and freezing still persisted.

Yes even the 1000W was enough as long as it was functioning properly.

Did you reply to GGTS as I suggested ?

I also have the gigabyte GTX 580 Ultra Durable and also had the same problem.Just Cause 2, Dragon Age 2, Metro 2033 were freezing at some point and would quit with the "the driver has recovered" message. I checked a few forums and saw that someone suggested the changing of the voltage of the card. I took the risk to change it with MSI's afterburner (dunno if gigabyte has such a software) and the problem stopped. I also had a problem with other games such as James Bond: Bloodstone and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, a much more severe one, where the computer after some time restarted in the middle of the game. I searched for that too in forums and when I twicked the voltage of the CPU and NB (i think) that problem went away as well. It seems like OC tools are starting to play big role in the stability of the computer, and I shall never again trust the "Auto" settings in the BIOS OC tool.

Auto settings and overclocking never seem to work well together.  Most settings need a bit of fine tuning to work at their best performance.

Does anybody know what kind of voltages to use to stabilize the card? I just got mine back from RMA and they said the card had no problems and the problem is still persisting on my end, and I contacted Gigabyte about this issue and they denied having any firmware issues with their overclocked cards, not helpful and so far there isn't any BIOS or firmware update for the GTX 580.

I don't know what is considered a stable voltage but if you run GPU-Z it will tell you what the present voltage is.
