GC330UD hangs if an USB stick is inserted while in BIOS

I want to boot from an USB stick, but this GC3300UD motherboard will crash completely (I can only reset it with the button) if I try to insert the stick before the operative system boots.

Any ideas?

Try starting up with the stick inserted and also go into the BIOS and make sure that Legacy USB Storage is enabled and maybe Legacy USB Devices tooo.

Are you sure that you have not a virus in your USB key ?

Dark Mantis: There are no Legacy options as is in this BIOS.

There are "USB 1.0" and "USB 2.0", and then "Keyboard", "Mouse" and "Storage".

Disabling 2.0 makes the BIOS not recognize the USB stick. The same with Storage. Enabling 2.0 and Storage makes the BIOS crash as soon as the stick is inserted, even at the menu for selecting a device for booting.

Windows absolutely ignores the BIOS settings, the sticks always works once the OS is running.

F5BJR: It doesn't have a virus. Also, what kind of virus is able to auto execute when in BIOS, and then crashes it? It wouldn't get very far.

I have just tried to track down your motherboard but the system doesn't recognise it. Can you please post the complete model number and revision.

Speccy identifies it as:

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GC330UD (Socket 437)

BIOS only adds that its flashed as firmware F2.

Ok, no legacy but the rest was the same.  Make sure all of ther following are enabled in the BIOS:

USB 1.0 Controller
Enables or disables the integrated USB controller. (Default: Enabled)
Disabled will turn off all of the USB functionalities below.

USB 2.0 Controller
Enables or disables the integrated USB 2.0 controller. (Default: Enabled)

USB Keyboard Function
Allows USB keyboard to be used in MS-DOS. (Default: Disabled)

USB Mouse Function
Allows USB mouse to be used in MS-DOS. (Default: Disabled)

USB Storage Function
Determines whether to detect USB storage devices, including USB flash drives and USB hard
drives during the POST. (Default: Enabled)

As I said earlier, USB2.0 and Storage enabled or disabled don't make a difference, it crashes immediately.

The only way not the make BIOS crash inserting an USB stick is disabling 1.0, so it directly doesn't detect anything.

Terrible but true, it was the stick.

I knew this USB key was bad, that was the reason for avoiding using it for transporting files and was relegated as a boot time tools carrier.

I think we all came to the same conclusion at the same time there. Anyway at least it is sorted now.
