Not Totally out of the proverbial yet

I can get surround sound!

BUT

when playing a file the application defaults to stereo and you have to manually set it to 5.1 sound every time you play the file.
 I've worked out how to do this in VLC (Default not saving) and Cyberlink but not in windows media player

there doesn't appear to be any correlation between the playback device via speaker icon (nr clock) and the Realtek HD Audio manager it seems that the applications are taking the 2 channel audio as default.
