Help needed with 1st RAID
« on: May 27, 2011, 09:21:37 pm »
Hello:
Setting up my first RAID 1 on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P/Intel Q9550 home build.  I'm using a pair of Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3 drives for the RAID.  The boot drive is a Intel SSD.  A 4th internal HDD will also be attached (WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3), and an eSATA socket for external drives.
My question: should I attach the RAID drives to the Intel ICH10R SATA Controller, or to the GIGABYTE SATA2 SATA Controller?  What about the other drives? Does it matter?
Thanks so much, wikksmith

You didn't say what operating system this is going under , so I'm going to assume W7 it is!

Put everything on the ICH10R except your optical drives (If sata) ....put it on the the Marvell controller........ICH10R will allow you to configure one or multiple Raid solutions, it has matured into being the front runner with on-board raid solutions and on the board you have is more then up to the task you want it to do...........I had 6 spin points hanging off the ICH10R on this very board under raid0 and was a very stable storage for me. clocking 425Mb/s read on a short stroke........remember to read up on F6 applicable drivers during the OS install

Aussie Allan:
Thanks so much for the info.
Yes, I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
I've already installed the OS: do I need to re-install or can I add the RAID by enabling RAID in the BIOS and then configuring the RAID installer?
I have the disc that came with the MB; do I need additional drivers?

Open regedit, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV], change "Start" to 0 (zero), reboot and change SATA to RAID mode in bios, install latest Intel RST driver. Done.

The great thing about Computers is there's usually more then one way to doing everything, Thanks Nijel , just learnt another way of doing something.....follow what Nijel said or you may have to re-install the OS.......if you have problems you just start again with the F6 driver procedure....Win 7 disc actually has a basic set of drivers on the install disc

iaStorV.sys is the M$ RAID driver so no need for F6. By setting it's Start parameter to 0 you make it one of the system's critical components needed to boot it. No need to reinstall the OS. Same goes for msahci.sys if you installed in IDE/RAID mode want to switch to AHCI.
