GA-X58A-UD3R (Rev 1.0) & GV-687OC-1GD - Crash, GPU shuts off

My system specs:
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (REV 1.0)
Gigabyte ATI HD6870 Windforce 3x factory overclock
Gigabyte Odin 720W (600W, 720W peak) PSU

The following happens when rendering 3D graphics, unpredictably:
Problem where GPU shuts down while the rest of the system remains powered on, looks like all power is lost to the GPU including fans not being operational.
CPU, motherboard and rest of components seem to be powered at event of crash.
Monitor shows a blank screen.
Solution is to forcefully reboot/power it off.

GPU temperature does not exceed 70 degrees Celsius under heavy load for a substantial amount of time.
ATI/AMD Catalyst suit 11.6 driver package installed.
Chipset driver version uncertain, >6 months old.

Has anybody experienced this problem before with this HW combination or this GPU model with another?
Is there a fix or could my GPU be faulty?

Hi

Well there could be many reasons for your problem at the moment. Possibly a PSU problem especially if the fans on the GPU stop running as well. I would try flashing the BIOS to the latest version and the same with the GPU firmware.

I would also ask GGTS while you are trying to sort it out as they can take some time to answer.

Thanks for the quick reply, I initially believed it could be the psu, I had the odin 470 installed, since then I bought and installed the odin 720. I have done the F6 bios update this afternoon.
Please advice on the maximum thermal operating temperature of the ati 6xxx series gpu, also if there are gpu bios updates available I could not find any reference to that on gigabytes site for the device.

The 6970 built on the Cayman architechture has a top safe temperature level of 104C. I would expect the others in the range built on the Bart core to be around the same or maybe a little higher.

Gigabyte's graphics cards help and details on the website are sadly lacking I am afraid and has been a bone of contention for ages. I think the best way to get hold of firmware etc is to contact GGTS and ask them.
