I just formatted and re-installed XP last week and screwed it up. So I want to start over. Right now it is using the Gigabyte Sata controller (GBB36X) to control the 2 SATA hds and the 2 IDE optical drives. I would like to have the optical drives under a more standard controller as windows reports them as SCSI. This causes burning problems as XP does not see them as recordable. If anyone thinks I can just un-install the Gig driverand reboot and install something different let me know as it would save hours... :-\

   Gidday Chum and Welcome!

I think I remember this board being ICH8R   ...  regardless, put everything (I would)  on this controller, or if your uncomfortable with this , use the "Giga" ports for your optical ... one of the reasons I say this is the Intel controller is well known and in the unlikely event you have problems, more people can come to your aid .... you sound like you know what your doing as you already had a rig up and running I assume you loaded yourself.... just go for it ;)

XP! remember to F6 drivers  during install if your Raiding

Hi

I think Allan has given good advice there  but it is often problematic to run IDE and SATA devices on the same board. You can alleviate this a bit by using different controllers as Allan has said. Ideally I would suggest just replacing the old drives with a couple of modern SATA devices as they are so cheap now.

DM has picked up what I missed discussing with better detail, what he states is from the Bible, Well almost! ... IDE and SATA just add one more potential problem, and we all have enough problems!

It was running great before with the drives on 2 separate controllers...even though they are cheap, I cannot afford new optical drives just yet.
Which drivers should I put on the floppy for the f6 install?

I may have miss read, if you intend to Raid 2 drives on the intel controller.... (Raid 0,1,5).....you'll need the raid drivers off the Gigabyte site for your board........Burn the floppy or disc/usb before you dump the OS......Floppy will give you the least hassles if you've only done it once or twice.

I am NOT intending to use RAID...I just wanted it to be like before, with the optical drives using IDE mode and the hard disks (not Raid) sata in native IDE mode
