GA-EP45-UD3LR Restarts After Shutdown
« on: June 23, 2011, 08:01:49 pm »
This has been a problem for a few years now, but I have just lived with it.

It started on an older gigabyte board coming up to two years ago:
GA_P35_DQ6.

Basically, after running a normal shutdown the system powers off and then five seconds later it powers back on;

- Not the OS/ I have ran a few linux distros and Windows 7 since the problem started.
- Not the PSU/ Just today I decided to swap from my OCZ PSU to my older Tagan 480W; the problem still continues with another PSU.
- Not the switch connectors/ I tried taking all switch connectors out, and the same problem is happening.
- Not the memory modules/ I have tried BALLISTIX in there before I received my newer Kingston. (NOT 100% sure on this one)

Maybe it is:

- An option in BIOS.
- Some sort of electrical shortage (I am no sparky! Though, I did take the DQ6 out and place it on my desk to test whether the same thing happened in order to eliminate any mouting errors that could be causing some shortage).

So, in summary, even the DQ6 with the old Tagan was having these problems. I then changed motherboards to the newer UD3LR and simultaneously changed to the newer OCZ PSU I am using today. Also, memory was swapped from Ballistix to Kingston.

Thankyou.

test:

SHUTDOWN -s -t 10 ( stop )

SHUTDOWN -r -t 10 ( restart )

shutdown -s -t 10
> The system shuts down as it normally would. Again, after about 5 seconds it starts by itself. Note that the system does "switch off" (the "on" light goes off) but then returns to life after this ~~ 5 second delay.

shutdown -r -t 10
> The system restarts as normal without any "switching off" / powering down. The "on" light stays on constantly.

I tried:

>Local Computer>Poweroff>Immediate
Which acted just like Local Computer>Shutdown>Immediate; the system shuts down as normal, powers off and then ~~5s after poweroff, it turns back on.

{{I will be away this weekend, merci for your help so far!}}

Well the first thing I would check is the case switches. Remove the cables for them and use the power button on board if there is one if not a short of some description across the two pins will start it.

If you still have the same problem try disabling all the sleep modes in the BIOS.

Hi, thanks for the input there but I mentioned:

- Not the switch connectors/ I tried taking all switch connectors out, and the same problem is happening.

> Unplugged all of them, and used a different switch. I have even shorted the two pins so no switch is used at all. The same problem continues.

Right in that case try disabling all the power saving and sleep modes in the BIOS. You can then enable the ones you want to use one at a time if it has the desired effect.

Okay, I will report back.

I will turn all of those options off. There is no way you could list them all? That is not an order, but it would be good to know. Are there many? Like I said though, I will have a go on my own and get back!

So, no luck at the minute. Maybe my eyes have missed more BIOS option, I do not know for now. Also, I noticed an option AC Back Function which is set to Soft Off. There is also a Soft Off Power Button Option which is set to 4 seconds; I do not know if this helps at all.

Aren't there a number of Power Management Setup BIOS options that specify when the PC is to wake or power on. Like "Power on by Ring", "Power on by Mouse", Power on by Keyboard", etc.

Their default setting should be Disabled, IIRC, might be worth checking anyway.

Yes, there are.

Power On With Mouse Event etc. I have made sure that these more obviously named ones are disabled.

This is becoming a real, real mistery. Further, I am getting a little annoyed. I do not believe for a second I could have got another defective motherboard from Gigabyte with the same issue.

Since changing parts of the computer from that older motherboard (see original post), the only things that I have not changed:

- CPU, e6750
- Video Card, 8800GTS,
- The tower itself.

Plus, when I did get this newer motherboard (UD3LR), the only setting I changed from the defaults in BIOS will have been to set my HDDs up for RAID 0.

Also, I can tell you that when I do shut down the system, wait for the computer to shut down and turn off the switch on the PSU, I can then - after some seconds - turn the switch on the back of the PSU on again. The computer will not turn on by itself. At the minute, it is this switching off of the PSU's switch that is needed. So long as I have done that, I can then turn the PSU switch on and wait for as long as I like before switching the tower's ON button.

Some more testing:

I booted straight into BIOS and found that the option: Soft Off Power Button is giving some clues.

It is set at 4 seconds. I hold in the power button on the tower. After 4 seconds the computer shuts down. It stays properly shut down.

I then boot into full OS. I hold in the power button on the tower. After 4 seconds the computer shuts down again, and it stays correctly shut down.

>>

I then boot into BIOS again. I change 4 seconds to Instantly Turn Of (or, something along those lines). I reboot back into BIOS. I turn the power button off on the tower (this time it does - as it says - instantly switch off). The computer shuts down, but then starts up after about 5 seconds.

>>

Also, I have noticed that the computer seems to stay turned off when there sounds like (just before the computer powers off) - what I can only describe as - a clicking noise. It is as if some device needs to properly shut down to prevent the computer from restarting: As if, this device needs to "click" off. Then everything seems fine. It is still inconsistent, but its more information for you all.

>>

EDITED: In the preceeding post I say:
"Also, I can tell you that when I do shut down the system, wait for the computer to shut down and turn off the switch on the PSU, I can then - after some seconds - turn the switch on the back of the PSU on again. The computer will not turn on by itself. At the minute, it is this switching off of the PSU's switch that is needed. So long as I have done that, I can then turn the PSU switch on and wait for as long as I like before switching the tower's ON button."

However, I have found that this is only the case if I leave the PSU switched off for some moments. If, after turning the PSU switch off, I try and turn it on again around the range of 0 - 10seconds, the computer powers straight on by itself.
