GA-X58A-UD7 USB3 Problem
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:58:30 am »
ok so iv got a little issue im using a Verbatim 2tb usb3 external hdd for all my files.
the problem is that windows doesnt recognise the drive when plugged in the usb 3 ports it just repeats a low pitch tone as though its bein unplugged repeatedly

Iv got the latest bios, drivers and firmware
Iv enabled usb 3 in bios

The drive works fine when plugged into a usb 2.0 port

Please someone talk me through setting the usb 3 up because im about 1 failed attempt away from taking a nice big hammer to this board

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

From your description of the problem it would sound like  a connector problem. Obviously the connector is working on the USB2.0 ports  but is not making a good connection on the USB3.0 ports with the extra pins. It could be the cable (most likely) or the ports on either end.

I would suggest trying another USB3.0 cable as the first option.

Yes thanks. I am always interested in these USB3.0 issues as they are fairly new and only just seem to be coming to light. ;)

Well assuming hte drivers aren't faulty I would say it is time to RMA the motherboard as it would seem that the ports are duff(technical term)!

You will need to contact your retailer and arrange for a replacement/repair.

just got board back from testing and they said the ports work fine so bought another usb 3 device and that works without a problem

so it must be my original usb 3 device

time to dig out the old faithful screwdriver and get the baby open

i suspect its the usb port on the drive so ill pick up a spare from maplins and see if that makes a difference

will keep you posted

So it was the USB3.0 device after all. It is always good to know especially with these components as they are still in their infancy. ;)

figured it out the device wasnt faulty after all

i just this minute looked at the ontroller utility and noticed a little check box to turn off power saving function

so i curiously checked it and applied the changes

low and behold the drive sprang into life and is working as it should :)
