Can't get SATA mode 2 on GX58-UD5 mobo

Can't get SATA mode 2 on GX58-UD5 mobo
« on: July 12, 2011, 06:54:13 pm »
I have three GX58-UD5 mobo's.  On one of them, I am using a Samsung 470 series 256gb ssd.   I am running XP 32 under the IDE settings for the controllers.   The others have other hardware and behave well, but the one in question will only POST into SATA 1 mode.  The LG DVD drive on the machine is also SATA 2 capable, so I cannot understand why it POSTS to  SATA1.   Is there a way to get this set correctly?

That is not a big problem because your DVD cannot saturate the SATA port ( in SATA1 or 2 or 3 mode ) !!

The issue is not with the DVD, it is the SSD.   Its performance is about half of what it should be.

OK I fixed it.   The answer does not make sense, but here is what I did.   First, I forced the correct Intel AHCI driver into the existing IDE based WXP installation.  On the blue screen reboot, I set up the Intel SATA controller in AHCI mode.  I had only one drive connected and it was connected to the Intel controller.   Once I ironed that out, I reconnected the BluRay DVD drive.    After everything was working I again ran SSD benchmarks, but they told me that it was running SATA 1 instead of SATA 2.   So no joy yet.  I then moved the BluRay drive to the Jmicron controller.  Still no joy.  Finally, I connected a SATA 2 hard drive to the Intel controller in addition to the Samsung SSD.   I then ran the Intel Rapid Storage utility.  It, like Sandra before it, said that both the SSD and the hard drive were in SATA 2.   This time when I ran the benchmark, in fact they were.  So I don't know if the good result came from running the Intel utility or adding the hard drive, but it now works well and the fast stuff is under AHCI control.

Well thanks for the explanation of how you managed to fix things. As you say it is not exactly clear what cured the problem but at least it did. ;)
