GA-P67A-UD4-B3, PCIEX1_1 slot hardware limitation?
« on: July 22, 2011, 04:45:27 pm »
Hi there.

I have a really simple query that I wanted to ask about. In the manual for the GA-P67A-UD4-B3, There is a added note in the diagram of the board indicating that the very first PCI-e slot has a hardware limitation that prevents it from accommodating longer PCI-e cards. I've search for any result of this hardware limitation but nothing that can elaborate further.

I have a sound card, an ASUS Xonar DX that I'd like to place in this slot preferably (my GTX 560 Ti is big enough that it covers the 2nd slot and the third and final PCI-e is right in front of the gpu's fan)

it's this hardware limitation that I'd like some clarification on. So if I put my DX in it, it would not function? or not as effectively? I don't see why it can't accommodate my DX, *there no heatsink in the way. like the  GA EX58-UD5.*

*(I'm citing the GA-EX58-UD5, because apparently it has the same limitation on the motherboard, however some users on another random tech forum interpreted it to mean the heat sink blocking the first PCI-e slot.)* I don't know if that is the same case with the GA-P67A-UD4-B3 rev.1.1 as I see no heatsink.

It may be refering to cards with lengths up to the size of a video card.

The only thing I can see in the way of that first pci-e slot is the ram but that only if using a card that is very long.
I used a EX58-UD4P and the heat sink was right next to the pcie slot so i could not sue any cards in there, but that is not the case with this board as far as I can see.

Long story short, you should be able to put your card in no problem.

Thanks for the quick response. :) I'll go ahead and seat my sound card. It will definitely fit, I was just unclear if the first slot had any problems reading large PCI-e cards or performance-wise.

Just a final note to  the exact wording is as follows:

(Note)    Due to a hardware limitation, the PCIEX1_1 slot can only accommodate a shorter PCI Express x1
expansion card. For a longer expansion card,  use other expansion slots.

So that's pretty much it. thanks

Yes it is referring to the size limitation nothing to do with performance at all. I don't really think that it is applicable to this motherboard but that is what it is for. ;)
