GA-8KNXP Ultra v 2.0: Shuts down while booting

Hello everyone!

I'm still using a GA-8KNXP Ultra v 2.0 board with a 3.0Ghz Intel Pentium 4 Prescott CPU. Last week I went to turn it on and nothing happened other than a bad smell - opening up the box revealed that the smell was coming from the old PSU.

So I now have a brand new Antec basiq 500W PSU in the box. After putting the machine back together the machine did a standard beep and began its POST. After 10-15 sec it just shuts off. I'm to the point where everything has been removed from the machine - I have five things plugged in to the motherboard:

• RAM sticks (ive tried all combos of 1,2,3 and 4 sticks)
• 20 pin power connector
• 4 pin 12v connector
• agp video card
• CPU Fan

I dont even have the front panel connectors connected - Im turning on the power on the PSU and then crossing the power pins to fire it up. Still shuts off after 10-15 sec no matter where it is in the boot up process.

I dont think this is the new PSU - is my MB toast? Thoughts?

I am afraid that this is probably the usual old story of a cheap and nasty PSU failing and taking other components with it.  Occasionally you can get lucky and lose just the power supply but more often than not this is what happens and one of the reasons why we are always adamant about using quality PSUs in your builds. Generally a good quality PSU even if it fails will not start killing everything around it.

I would say it is highly likely that your motherboard or processor/memory is toast.

  What DM said!..........unless you have two of everything to test and find the deady......really hard call........only suggestion is if you have a friend that will swap bits in and out to see what you have left is good or bad....Sorry.

Thanks for the replies. The old PSU was an Antec 380U unit. Such a bummer!

I pulled the MB and installed a different one into the case and the new PSU worked just fine. I also pulled the RAM and it still works fine. So its either the MB itself or the CPU. Guess its finally time to put the ol' P4 Prescott out to pasture.

Happy to hear that it is sorted out now and that you are using this chance to do a long overdue upgrade! To be honest the Antec PSU must have been struggling along for a long time now. 380w is minimal even for the outdated hardware you were running and when you take into account capacitor droop that will have taken it's toll the thing was probably only giving out about 320w total. Always buy a bigger PSU than you think you are going to require and make sure it is a good quality make.
