AMD GA-890GPA-UD3H no longer supports 1333 memory
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:46:22 pm »
Today, I upgraded my BIOS from FGA to FGF. I did this primarily because I have 2 2GB sticks of Patriot DR3 1600 memory and am tired of getting the warning beep when I set my memory speed in the BIOS to support 1600.  I've been running at 1333 instead.

So, I did the BIOS upgrade, selected the Optimized Defaults, rebooted, went back into the BIOS and set all the devices parms (am using AHCI).

So far, so good -- boots to Win7 desktop, runs OK.  But, the memory is set to 1066 -- this is apparently the AUTO default.

Went back into BIOS, changed memory speed to 1333 -- and got the long warning beep.  Same one I used to get when trying to run the memory at 1600, but now, I get this even trying to run the memory at 1333.

So, I looked at the latest CPU-Z info, and according to that, the memory can handle 457MHz, 533MHZ, and 800MHZ.  So, this is telling me that the memory will only run at 900, 1066, and 1600, right?  So, how come NOW, it won't run at 1333?

And, yes, I did save off the previous BIOS so I can reload that.  But, I was hoping that the new BIOS would let me run the memory FASTER, not force me to run it SLOWER.

Hi

You could always try a different BIOS version in between them, say FGE or something and see if that 0cures your problem. However as you say this new FGF BIOS has support for 1600Mhz RAM so why not just make use of it ? I thought that was what you were originally trying to do ?

That's what I'm trying to do ... The RAM is 1600 and when I set the memory multiplier to that, the motherboard beeps at me and forces me to set it back down to 1066!  At least with the FGA BIOS, I was able to get.

I asked because I saw another thread where someone flashed their BIOS to FGF as well, and they were not able to handle the faster memory speeds, either.

In that case it would seem to be a BIOS issue that you are fighting with.  Let GGTS know so they can do something about it and maybe even give you a tweaked version to use for now.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

OK, so where can I download a BIOS version between FGA and FGF?

I went to the Gigabyte site, and the only FGx BIOS they had was FGF.

Yes that was the only one I could find here too. Have a try on TweakTown in the States(Gigabyte forum etc) at :

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/

they normally  have a better range of updates than us.

Whilst this is true for Intel based Gigabyte boards I'm afraid I can not agree when it comes to the AMD side of things. Sadly, I don't think you will be able to get an earlier version of the FGx BIOS unless you contact Gigabyte directly and ask them for it.

Yes I would have to agree with you absic about the AMD side of things over there. They don't seem to be as interested in AMD  as Intel.

OK ... used Qflash to restore the FF version BIOS.  Now, can not only run at 1333, also have the ability to run at 1600!!

Now that I recall, I had to cut back to 1333 when I upgraded the BIOS to FGA.

Also ran a memory diagnostic test at 1600 -- and passed with no problems.

So, now that I have various BIOS versions saved to USB stick, I'll stick with BIOS FF for a while and see how it goes.

@zeroduster922

First a word of caution before you go ahead and run your RAM at 1600MHz you might want to look through this post: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2515.0.html

If you still want to run your RAM at it's rated speed then you need to make the adjustments under the MIT Section of BIOS.
Set Memory clock needs to be changed from AUTO to MANUAL
Memory clock needs to be x8.00
If, after making these changes, the system is unstable then you may need to increase the DRAM Voltage slightly or alter the Timing slighty to get things working right,

Thanks for the cautionary link on running at 1600 speeds.  I hadn't noticed that before.

So ... I have reduced my memory speed to 1333.
