Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H Boot Menu/USB Problem

Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H Boot Menu/USB Problem
« on: September 03, 2011, 02:30:13 am »
Motherboard: Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H rev 2.1, BIOS version: F6E

When I hit "F12" during boot to access the boot menu the computer just stops loading at a flashing dos prompt. This can also happen sometimes when I try to access BIOS and hit "DEL".  Some other times the USB keyboard won't be recognized at all and I have to reset the PC to make it work again. It always works well in Windows though.
I have tried accessing the boot menu with 2 different USB keyboards and the same thing happens. But when I use a PS/2 keyboard everything works perfect.

I also had this exact same problem on a completely different system with a Gigabyte 870A-UD3 motherboard, but never on any other PC than with these two boards.

Hi

No problem easilly fixed. You just need to go into the BIOS and enable the USB Legacy Support. There may be one or even two entries to enable all you find. Probably something like USB Legacy Devices and USB Legacy Storage.

Hi there,

whilst I don't want to contradict DM on this, you might find that the problem is actually down to the BIOS and I would recommend flashing back to the F5 version to see if that helps.

The F6E BIOS is a BETA version that has added support for the new Fusion FX AM3+ Processors, when they come along and as such, may not be entirely suitable at the moment.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I have already enabled/disabled USB options in BIOS in lots of combinations and it doesn't help at all. If I disable "USB Legacy Support" the USB keyboard won't work at all.
I think this boot menu problem is a BIOS issue, but since it occurred even on my Gigabyte 870A-UD3 (which has the same southbridge SB850) it must be a wide-spread Gigabyte issue.

I will try downgrading to F5 and see if it helps.

The F5 BIOS seems to have fixed the problem, I tried the boot menu a couple of times and no issues so far.

As for the Gigabyte 870A-UD3 rev2.1 I think the problems might have started with the F5 BIOS released 2011-08-01 (which is very close to the 880GMA-UD2H F6E BIOS release. But I don't have the 870A-UD3 board anymore so I can't test it.
I think it's safe to say that something was changed in BIOS for both those motherboards at the same time which causes this USB issue.

Thank you for your help! I hope the "Bulldozer BIOS" will work well with USB keyboards in the future.

I have had this issue on the GA-990FXA-UD5 with some of the different BIOS version I have tested and in some cases I could only get into BIOS from a cold start. Luckily this has been fixed with the latest version I am running but it does seem to be occurring quite frequently with some of the newer BIOSES at the moment.

As you say, hopefully this particular issue will be fixed when the AM3+ processors come along, if not, there will be a lot of unhappy users.

Well contradicted absic! You were obvoiusly quite right there. It is another good reason to keep a PS2 keyboard to hand. ;)

I only know because of some of the issues I have faced when beta testing recent BIOS version for my own motherboard DM.  ::)

Well, today AMD FX Series were released but there is still no properly working BIOS for my motherboard. Do you know if a working BIOS is on the way within the next few days or do I have to buy another motherboard to make it work with these new CPUs?

I found a solution.
in bios go to one of the menu and you will find.
USB keyboard support - change it to enable.
Also good to enable the USB mouse.
