Power supply to CPU-GA X58A-UD9

Power supply to CPU-GA X58A-UD9

Just interested to know the correct connection/use of the  8pin ATX_12v_2xATX_12v_2x_1 as there
two of them for CPU power

Is it necessary to connect them both or just one set if running a say, a 980X cpu?

Not very clear on the manual

Grateful for advise

Hi

You need to attach all 8 pins  to make the system stable. It might actually run with only four pins connected but you will have problems.

There are actually two (2) sets of 8pin power connectors on the board; do we need to connect just one set of 8pin connector and leave the other empty or connect both?

The second one is for the PCIE slots and so depends on the amount of power drain you are expecting to use there. If you are running a triple or quad SLI or Crossfire setup then you will need to connect all the plugs. I think with dual or single GPUs it will be ok with just one. ;)

Thanks DM for the info

I was confused as there are already two PCIE_12v connectors on the board and did not realise that the other ATX_12v_2x/ATX_12v_2x_1 next to the CPU power connector was for the PCIE power as well as you said

The diagram on page 28 of the booklet is confusing as it did not say the other 8pin connector is for the PCIE sockets. Even page 30 of the booklet just show the two on board PCIE 12v connectors without reference to the other 8pin connector next to the CPU power as being a power source for the PCIE?

Just reading a review of the board at tomshardware.com and this is what they said: "other points of interest is a second eight-pin CPU power connector that feeds the X58-UD9's 24-phase power regulator

I guess I have to connect this connector as well?

This is what I understood anyway. It is a case of either/or with the molex connectors for the PCIE. I have the UD7 board which also has 24 phase power regulators but my board only uses one 8 pin 12v connector but there again I can't draw so much power from the PCIE bus.

The thing is that if it is necessary the board won't run properly without it and if it isn't then you are home and dry. Just try it and see. ;)

   If you connect ALL the sockets available to you wont hurt anything and there no question in your mind

  If you don't connect ALL the sockets available to you you might hurt something and there will ALWAYS be a question in your mind..........Bit of a no brainer , isnt it! ;)

I have a UD9 and running a 990x CPU on it. I also have a SLI setup and pretty much all my card slots are filled.

The 8-pin power connectors from my CPU were just a tad bit too short to reach from my PSU to the MB and I only had one extension cable available when I built my system. So at first I was only using one - and my system were unstable with a few bluescreens until I got a second extension cable and connected the second 8-pin power connector. After that my system has been rock stable.

So in my case, bot the 8-pin PSU connectors were necessary for my system to run stable. if you're running a non-SLI setup with just a few PCIe slots filled then you might get away with only using one of the connectors, but then again there is no reason not to use both.

I would certainly say that it is foolish not to connect both when they are there and available. It definitely helps with stability even if it would run with only one installed.

I could not connect my top PCIE 12v_1 because of the rather large CoolerMaster V8 heatsink as well as the hybrid silent pipe in place! I'll do this some other time and might have to do away with the hybrid silent pipe if access is a problem.

I'm using a 1000W ThermalTake "galaxy" PSU and the power cables from the PSU can easily reach the 2 x 8pin ATX_ 12v_x2 connectors at the top left corner.

 I'm also using a CoolerMaster HAF XL case which has so much room to accommodate the rather large board
 & it also has grommets allowing cables to be neatly arranged within the case

So you have also connected the other ATX _8-pin 12v_2x for the 24-phase power regulator on this board and that has answered my question

You don't need to connect both of the PCIE molex power connectors on the board so don't worry about the top one if it is "hidden" by some device or the passive Hybrid Silent Pipe cooler. One is quite sufficient even if 4 GPUs are used.
