Highpoint 640 and GA-790FXTA-UD5

Hello All,

My current board has SATA 2 storage interfaces and I would like to update them to SATA 3 by way of a Highpoint 640 card and would like some help in configuring it so that it shows the following:

Drive C  - OS and Programs

Drive D  - backup

The quick installation guide doen't really inform me how to achieve this:

Other viable option that has been suggested by absic is using SSD to improve boot up times which I'm also considering.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Is that above configuration achievable then Allan, without 2 seperate HDD's being seen as one big HDD? If so how do go about configuring it, is it through the Highpoint 640's BIOS?

Yes!......if you get the card....and if you run into problem....we can go into it in more detail

  if you sit on the fence with the new capabilities this card will bring to your system, you might decide on a different configuration take your blinkers off (In a nice way of course)

  Best bang for buck....if you have the pockets....SamsungSpinpoints F3 (502HJ) can be had for under 30 pounds each at the moment for the 500 gig model

  Although these are Sata2.....they out perform about half the Sata3 plattered drives currently available....even if you purchased 2 to begin with....but say you bought 4.........you could use the current drives for a clone and the other for long term storage and backing up.....this would free up the entire 640 card to run Raid0 under the 2 controllers .....this would give you 2TB of C: drive......500+ read and write speed

  You would also free up all your sata3 port for further fun and games.............Raid1 and 10 could also be considered under this setup.

Makes sense Allan. Woulkd get a huge performance gain for a small outlay really and a huge amount of space to play with.

Hi Allan,

Where can the information be found on these components? I have got 2 SATA3 ports on my board which are controlled by the Marvell 9128. I have Adobe Web Premium CS5 what set up would you recommend for that software and its various uses.

  I'm a heavy Photoshopper (CS5 Extended) and HDR user.....have a look at my spec............Aria, Scan, Yoyo and Ebuyer covers 90% of my buying.

  The 9128 chip was supposedly sorted out on later boards including yours..........not brilliant but they work a lot better.......that's the main reason I went the 640 path as I have a X58A

Hi Allan,

i read on a previous thread that you had to RMA the 640 twice if I read it correctly, was it a case of third time lucky?

Are you saying that 9128 chip will allow me to run two ports at SATA3 and does it have to be in RAID?

 No ...it was only once.........I spent weeks trying to get the  $£*^$ card initially working, as I had to turn off a few function in the cards Bios as it was to be a non boot config (INT13 Ext) ... I become complacent with no RMA in near on 3 years odd..........anyway ....it was a deady........

  Once the new card arrived.....and was configured..........it fired up pretty well first time......Just so you know.....with the combination of this card and a Revo X2.........inatially I had to go into Bios and reset the boot order constantly.....untill I had everything installed and the system settled down to that config.......big call really with the amount I have in side for BIOS and OS to contend with

Hello Allan,

Yes, that something to consider, I don't want to buy anymore HDD's to get 2 TB on the C: drive which the speeds that you have stated  are impressive but it's just the outlay. Ideally, the setup I would have is:

Maybe with the addition of a card to give me SATA3 6Gbp/s. Have I missed something?
