POWER TO ALL COMPONENTS BUT NO BEEP ON STARTUP

Looking for answers.   I have a Gigabyte GA 880GA-UD3H.   Processor X6 Black Edition,  ATI 6800 Series Video Card and 850 Watts PSU and RIPJAW DDR 3 Memory.

This is NOT my first build so not a newby and have tried a few different things but here is my INTERMITTANT PROBLEM!!!!

Computer was running fine until about 8 months ago when computer would simply power up but NO BEEP, thus no BIOS CHECK and the next steps that lead to Windows boot.   First thought was PSU.  Changed PSU and problem went away.   Then 4 months ago same problem arose thus changed PSU again and fixed the problem AGAIN but was getting suspicious about  2 failing PSU's.   Hmmmm.  Then 2 weeks ago same problem.   Ordered NEW PSU AGAIN but this one is either defective on arrival or something else is wrong because I plugged new 850 Watt PSU and problem is still there.  Everything lights up, CPU Fan powers up,  hard drive, disk drive, case fans, video card, EVERYTHING powers up BUT NO BEEP from BIOS CHECK.   Took out new PSU and put back the SUPPOSEDLY OLD ONE and bingo, everything starts up with the BEEP.  Put back NEW PSU and NO BEEP, Put back OLD PSU and get BEEP.

My question is.   IS THERE ANOTHER REASON WHY I WOULD NOT Have a BEEP on startup when everything is getting POWER.   Could it be that the BIOS has seomthing wrong with it.   Could it be a bad ground on mother board.   Should I flash the Bious.   Have taken out all components and reseated them but don't know if problem has come back yet because it is intermittant.  Any help or insight would be appreciated.  Thanks

Hi there,

I can understand your frustration and it would seem on the face of it that there is a problem with the PSU connectors which is why, when you swap things out it works for a while then falls over again.

I would double chek that the 24 pin and the 4 or 8 pin ATX connectors are making a good connection in the motherboard sockets and that they are not loosing connect, over time, when the cables flex.

Updating BIOS is an option and if you do this I would recommend using QFlash not the @BIOS software and that you disable the "keep DMI Data" option on the QFlash homescreen before running the update.

Thanks,  that's what I thought but from the MOTHERBOARD side of things,  kinda like there is a cracked soder or something and when it gets too hot or moves for some reason contact is lost an thus my problem arises.

Have you ever heard of someone just applying the heated soder gun to the contacts just to remelt the soder and make sure it makes a good contact!  Is there a danger of burning out the motherboard.  Asking because I do this to boards in fuel dispensers and usually fixes my problem, was wondering if I could apply this to the motherboard, not knowing if this is a more sensitive piece of hardware than printed circuit boards in dispensers.

it is, of course possible, that there is a crack in the solder and the symptoms you are experiencing could be due to this an dthe stresses created as components heat up.

Usually I would advise against putting a heated solder iron anywhere near a motherboard but if you are confident in your abilities and wish to try this then it is possible to do. I have replaced parts on older mothrboards without a problem. Just bear in mind that if you do this, you will probably void any warranty that you have remaining.

If there is a Gigabyte reapir centre in Canada, which there probably is, it might be a good idea to send it in and therefore not break the terms of your warranty.

Hmmm, haven't thought of the warranty part, thinking that it was over since this board has been bought almost 1 year ago actually.   I'll look into this, and if so, where do I find an authorized Gigabyte repair center in Canada.

I would say that you should go down the RMA route personally as the board has a three year warranty from the date of manufacture. However if you do decide to use the soldering iron it is not so dangerous from the heat aspect as long as you are fairly competent but do make sure that the iron is disconnected from the main once up to heat before you touch the board. They could be at different potentials electrically otherwise and that wouldn't be good!

Yes, RMA that way you will know your motherboard will come back to you fit for purpose.

All the ideas that you got are very valid but I just wanted to throw this out ..
When you changed power supplies you had to remove all power connections for a short while..I wonder
if that had some effect in your intermittent  situation?Perhaps bios related instead of PSU related?
Just a thought..

Worth checking but removing all the power shouldn't make any difference whatsoever as that is what the motherboard battery is for.

My guess is that there's either a bad solder join or 1 of your motherboard's power connections is shorting something out, rendering your PSU to an useless chunk of metal.
You could always double-check the rest of your components just to be sure tho.
