X58 G1 Assassin 980x Overclocking...
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:08:48 pm »
Hi all, new to the Forum.

Basically, I cant get any overclocks past 4GHZ stable with my 980x using a H100 CPU cooler.

BSOD even before Windows login.

Turing off HT tech and all other features does help for a few mins but still gives me a BSOD, I don't think it is temps as the H100 is on level 3 (highest) and doesn't ramp up the RPMs like 4GHZ will when using heavy load.

Using Bios revision F4 and have tried all sorts of configs ranging from videos on YouTube to G1 Assassin hardware reviews with overclock articles and general 980x overclock reviews for help.

Anyone help me achieve at least 4.4GHZ or 4.5GHZ? Possibly with the same kind of setup? ... I have a 5GHZ template I used from

http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/zardon/gigabyte-g1-assassin-and-intel-core-i7-990x-extreme-edition-review/36/

with absolutely no luck at all but I know 5GHZ is a silly clock to try and get with the 980X even on a H100 cooler but they done it ?! I also tried that as a basis for lower clocks and still no luck.

My last motherboard was an Asus Rampage III Extreme and that took me to a stable 4.4GHZ easy ...

My system is:
CoolerMaster HAF-X (With 3 huge intake fans and 3 huge exhaust fans)
    Intel i7 980x
Corsair H100 CPU Liquid Cooler (Arctic Silver 5 TIM)
    Gigabyte G1 Assassin (B1) Bios F4
    Enermax MaxRevo 1500w PSU
    Corsair Dominator GT 3x2GB 1866Mhz
Corsair Vertex 3 MAX IOPS 2X240GB Raid0 SSD SATAIII 6GB Marvell 9182 128KB Stripping Write Cache ON
POV/TGT GTX590 Ultra Charged QUAD SLI
    Creative Sound Blaster X-FI 20K2
    Bluray Drive
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
    Acer G24 1920x1200
    Razer Keyboard & Mouse
    Logitech Z-5500

Thanks dudes!!

Welcome DarkStalker980x .....Nice toy list!........you'll be on water soon for sure ;)

To get the Max out of your setup ....you're going to have to test a few things so you're not chasing your tail and wasting time.....time spent here will save you days in the long run.

First you need to establish if the memory modules are rock solid stable for the clock you have your heart set on......pain in the ICE I know but it will mean Memtest each dimm separately.....10 passes each .... takes a while but critical to establish there the dimms to get you to the high clock

once you get that done, assuming the memory passes OK is disable, Turbo, all "C" states and anything you can think of that will give you fluctuations coming from and to your CPU ...... now your going to set everything to bog , stock, standard so you can generate some "base-line bench marks" for your system.......these will be invaluable later on .....temps (CPU , cores, bridge,case,... the lot) voltages as well......I like OCCT for this as it has a pretty handy desktop to play with and most things at your fingertips......but use pen and paper as well......records are key........even if it's a stack of loose A4s to jot down settings and bios changes.......you won't remember 10% of them!!!! Especially the next morning.

It's about now you will also have to decide whether you want virtual cores enabled or not........8 cores....better performance....but lower max clocks.....4 cores.......you get the idea.

Another point is the TIM or thermal compound your using ....... never have I used a compound that can beat IC-Diamond......I got 4C lower over Arctic silver5 ......Next.......Read and follow this..................

  http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/538439-guide-overclocking-core-i7-920-930-a.html

You can't follow it to the letter as you have a 980, but most of the content is applicable........Post back when you get going and if you have any question .......where here!

Aussie Allan......P.S  you might get a little more with 64 bit strip size on the SSD raid0....try it out anyway  and (ATTO Benchmark)  if you have to bench SSDs.......ATTO is a little less destructive ;)

Hi and welcome DarkStalker.

You have left out the most important bit of information there which is what is the Stop code from the BSODs ? This would give us a lot more to go on regarding the source of the problem.

rite basically ... I have the cpu @ 4.3ghz stable as hell but thats at a high 1.52vcore level 2 vdroop .. is 1.52v high on the assassin? mem is on bios 2000mhz 9-9-9-24 t1 but real time reporting 1992mhz at 1.7v .. i found someone who has 4.7ghz stable from a push/pull H100 god knows what vcore hes at but i will try it anyways ... IC-Diamond seems to be a big hit as well so thanks for mentioning that one !!

Thanks for your help !! =)

Good news DarkStalker980x ...... I'm actually quite happy to take Intel to 1.5V, but 1.7V will bring a short life......you can also get a diminishing effect as the Silicon will cook itself from the inside out......high temp is bad but high volts will slowly destroy the efficiency of the transistors within the die.......Al of a sudden the 4.4Ghz you've been enjoying will become unstable.....you reduce to 4.35........then a few week or months later the same happens again.....and so on

Get that push pull going ASAP and try to keep it under 1.5-ish.

keep an eye on this thread over the next couple of months ... could be some really worth while tips and tricks ...........as well  new technology being put to good use ..... 8)

X79? Ivy Bridge? ;) yeah i cant wait either!! thanks for the extra infos oh and when i meant 1.7v that was for the ram to stabilize 2000Mhz from 1886Mhz.. the CPU never went above 1.52vcore .. G1 Assassin Bios shows that 1.55v for the CPU enters into high voltage so wont be going there .. Opting for the Swiftech H20-320 HD Edge with triple 120mm radiator and of course the  IC-Diamond ;) Good Fourm and epic service!

Thanks guys

  DarkStalker980x

Well that clears the water a bit........I thought the 1.7v was being put through the CPU......It can be done.....but your cooling needs to be "EPIC".....

What sort of temp differential are you now getting using "IC Diamond" over what you used before?.....trying to compile data of users.
