ex58 ud5 jayfunks overclock is losing sound?
« on: October 19, 2009, 07:08:54 pm »
hey everyone!
sure hope someone has some ideas to help me.
basically my asus xonar sound card is losing sound and becoming super quiet. this happens when i overclock to my 4.2 ht settings and the only way to get sound back is to clear cmos. loading optimized defaults does not work. so obviously something is getting changed and the sound card is not happy.
what else can i say.. here are my settings and id sure appreciate some help here. thanks again in advance.

gigabyte ex58 ud5
i7 965
asus xonar d2x sound
corsair 3 gig 1600 ram
1000 psu silverstone
gtx 280 sli

25x168 = 4.2
ht on turbo off
qpi = x36 = 6.04
mem = x10 = 1680
vcore = 1.46875
qpivtt = 1.455
ioh core = 1.18
dram = 1.64
term = 0.76
cpu pll = 1.8 manual default
pcie = 1.5 manual default
qpipll = 1.1 manual default
ich i/o = 1.5 manual default
ioh core = 1.1 manual default

cpu enhanced halt state off
c3/c6/c7 state support off
cpu thermal monitor off
cpu eist function off
virtualization ON
bi-directional prOchot off

cpu clock drive 800 mV unchanged
pci express clock drive 900 mV unchanged
cpu and ioh skew 0ps unchanged

azalia codec disabled to turn off onboard sound

well thats it. all i can think of is that there is a voltage somewhere that i missed that needs to increased to go along with the overclock. maybe pcie voltage?? maybe pcie express frequency? maybe pci express clock drive?
i dunno. please help any ideas greatly appreciated...
cheers
jay

ps. ive loaded the latest bios version for the board... f9beta. it too a couple of tries to get it to boot but i do have sound now. im not too confident if it will last so any input on my settings is still greatly appreciated from felow gigabyte owers. thx

You shouldn't need to adjust any pci-e settings in the Bios by overclocking the cpu. Never heard of this issue before, I would guess the best thing to do is phone Gigabyte to see what they say. Not sure about this but would it be to do with Southbridge? Nothing else I can think of... Unless something is up with the power supply, but it looks fine to me.

Someone here might know, has alot more people with greater knowledge:

does it happen only with add-on sound card?
so with integrated sound card no problem?
try with pcie express frequency

hi jayfunk

thanks for the info, but honestly ....i'm bit confused  ??? as you wrote that you had 9 beta bios on the very beginning .... and then...installing 9 beta helped you to fix the problem...

so which bios version you had previously and which you have now?

bios ver. F9E is the latest beta: http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2958

yes i can see how you misunderstood my post cuz it was unclear..... i went from bios v7 to bios v9beta and that fixed the problem.

Sure will do, although it will be a while due to my desktop being down. My graphics card fan died :(

hey just thought id comment on what happened in case anyone else has this similar problem.
ive found that the problem is that the soundcard is sitting properly in the mobo and i have to wiggle it and adjust it either up a little or down in order to get it to work. it loses sound after a while and i have to adjust it again. i wish there was a clamp or something to hold it in there.
ahwell at least i figured it out
cheers and good luck

thanks for the info, seems like some electrical connection problem, right?
so asus has different dimentions for pci-e slot than gigabyte?
