hard disk hot swap
« on: November 14, 2011, 02:14:16 am »
just finished a build with 990fxa-ud5 with am3+ 8150.  first build in over 5 years. previous was an msi that allowed hot swapping.  i have not been able to do that with this gigabyte board.  i have a hot swap on the case and another by addonics.  i tried changing the onchip sata type to ahci but then the system wouldn't boot. any suggestions? tia

Hi,

Yes, your system will allow hot swapping but you cannot just change the mode to AHCI once you have installed the operating system. Normally results in a BSOD if you do. You have two choices you can either do a fresh install with the drive controllers set to AHCI mode first or thetre is a hack you can do if you feel capable.

How to change IDE mode to AHCI after OS installation.

1.Exit all Windows-based programs.

2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesMsahci

5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.

6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.

thank you dark mantis!.  running winxp pro sp3 and just put the old hard drive in the new box and no problems.  deleted a few old drivers.  also have new win7 64 to install on another disk  so will i be able to toggle ahci in bios before installation of that os?

Yes just set the controllers to AHCI in the BIOS before you start to install the software/Windows.
