Monitor noise
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:12:48 am »
My AOC 27' LCD monitor is starting to make a buzzing noise, is this common for LCD's?
The monitor is 6 months old.
Tried swapping from  HDMI to DVI but it still buzzes even when the video cable is removed.
Any ideas on how to fix this besides earplugs & or turning up  my sound system?
Ben.

Hi Ben,

If the monitor is 6 months old it may be still covered under the warranty.....have you contacted AOC Technical Support about the issue?

Thanks for your reply, no I haven't as yet as I wasn't sure this was a warranty issue.
Will send them an email, I would go back to the shop I got it from, but they always play hard ball, plus the receipt they gave me is hard to read (faded) as most of their receipts are. (cheap ink?).
Thanks again.
Ben.
PS will let you know how I got on.

Hi Ben ;)

You are sure is not the speakers in the monitor? Maybe ...

Try plugging the speaker cable into your headphone jack or an iPod.
And check it.

If is the monitor, maybe is the fan in interior.
If have a fan in interior the monitor, of course.

So if you want change it, for a fanless product... why not.
You keep a monitor. And probably cost less than return to RMA.

EDIT01:
The problem , if you go to store:
This is the background noise in the shop. They will say, all going well, we hear nothing.

EDIT02: Other things : the condensators have a problem...

Is it just a suggestion.

Hi Ben,

I had a similar situation with my monitor...if you have all of the documentation to hand, even the faded receipt, they may ask for the serial number etc. Explain the situation to AOC and hopefully they should allow you to RMA the monitor. I have a BenQ monitor and they didn't quibble and replaced it.

In the UK we have a government body called Consumer Direct....if there is an Australian equivalent you could contact them just so you know what your consumer rights are. if you have any problems they will be able to advise you on the steps to take. It's no fun having to go on that merry-go-round when you have spent your Aus $.

Hope this helps,

No not from the speakers checked that.
If there is a fan could be coming from that.
I have just 2 minutes ago sent AOC an email regarding this, hope I get a reply, probably next week I am thinking.
Regards faded receipt a friend of mine took his faulty video card back & showed them his receipt (faded) they said it wasn't theirs.
Good thing his wife works at the courts, as they suddenly remembered.

Hi Gloup, will give your last suggestion a go.
As for government body yes we do have one & they actually fined the company in April I think it was, for a sum of $200.000.
For misleading & warranty issues.
They must have deep pockets.

Got  a reply from AOC to say that they have received my email will contact me ASAP.
Tried all suggestions to no avail.
Also noted that when I first switch on the monitor there is no noise I even waited a couple of minutes still no noise.
It only does this when I switch on my computer the noise starts & then when I switch it of again the noise is still there.
So for the moment it's a waiting game from AOC.

Hay Ben.......I'm now running me PC at sub Zero temperatures......All I do is stick it outside.. :D...How's that for green :D

Just saw the original post.....Just RMA the bugger.....should be no reason for "Consumer affairs" just yet

It sounds like coil Whine........funny little ceramic ring with copper wire wrapped around it.......usually situated around the Power PCB board inside the monitor.

if RMA fails (not likely) and if you can get access to it......some of your nail-polish (or the wife's) will lock the wire down and stop it vibrating....this in turn set up a RF which is probably the buzzing you can hear!

Hi Aussie Allan and Ben,

I have researched on this phenomena of noise. Here's what I found. It is generally, but it certainly helps for understanding the situation. Finally, I hope ....

The major noise sources are transformers and capacitors.

Transformers can produce audible noise, since they contain many physically movable elements, such as coils, isolation
tapes and bobbins.
The current in the coils produces electromagnetic fields which generate repulsive and/or attractive forces between the coils.
This can produce a mechanical vibration in the coils, ferrite cores or isolation tapes.

The Ceramic capacitors can also produce audible noise,

since they have piezoelectric characteristics.
If there is still too much audible noise in burst operation after gluing or varnishing the transformer properly, the capacitor in the snubber network should be examined.

By replacing the ceramic capacitor with a film capacitor,

the audible noise can be reduced.

In general, human ears are most sensitive to frequencies of 2kHz~4kHz and are less sensitive to frequencies which are higher or lower
The fundamental frequency of burst switching can be changed by modifying the feedback network, with a circuit modification.

Enough to argue in front of a salesman or even better, front of a company technician.  ::)

G'Day Gloup,
Thanks for the update been searching this myself also, as you say the caps etc make some noises, what i don't understand is when I initially switch on the monitor there is no noise whatsoever.
It only happens when I switch on the computer it starts up. (The noise seems to come from near the power switch on my monitor bottom middle about 1 third of the way up).
When I switch off the computer & unplug it the noise is still there, only when I switch of the monitor does it disappear.
You would think it would produce this noise when I first switch on the monitor so what changes?
Any how hope to hear from AOC soon maybe they can shed some light on it.
Ben.
PS this is off the subject ( & if deleted I will understand) my late father went to school in Saskatchewan I believe this is somewhere in Canada, he & his parents then came to Scotland to live, so there is a teensy bit of Canadian in me
