8600GT fails to POST from cold boot
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:39:35 pm »
My GV-NX86T256D no longer works properly on a cold boot, instead I get the one-long, two short beeps that indicate a gfx card fault. However, when I press the reset button it comes to life and works fine.

When it does finally work, I can't play Guild Wars because the frame rate is abysmal and the music/sound effects play at half-speed.

On the rare occasion it powers on first time from a cold boot, Guild wars is fine.

Other 3D games seem to play the same as before.

Are these symptoms of the infamous NVIDIA cock-up?

Hi,
Have you tried the card in another pc?
Checked your bios for updates,?
Have you downloaded the latest drivers?
Check with your card supplier,
Regards

Bios is at latest version. Latest drivers also tried. Card supplier contacted, awaiting reply.

Just tried windows 7, and guild wars started ok but in game it had heavy texture flashing and corruption inc. gpu crashes.

TFC was ok to start with but got very laggy. No graphics corruption seen.

Mobo is a gigabyte 965p-ds3 rev 3.3 and i can't see any blown caps or other board damage.

Tried it in another board and it worked perfectly...

Put it back in mine and it worked fine for two days, now it has failed again. Examined PSU voltages and they all look ok, and the psu has no blown or leaky caps. It's a seasonic 430HB (430 Watts).

I'm thinking the motherboard might be at fault too, unless I can get the card to fail in the other board as well.

Replace one item at a time which will help identify the particular component, I have my guesses on that PSU. I heard that brand is fairly unreliable and has caused problems with setups in the past.
Core i7 965 @ 4.35Ghz 1.37Vcore

Hmm, well the other machine I tried it in also had the same make of psu. I did check all the voltages off it with a multimeter while under load and they were all well within spec. I also checked it for blown or leaky caps and it looked as good as the day I bought it.

The card has booted properly twice within the last two days, which is strange.

One thing I did notice is when I run a gpu stress test I can hear a buzzing from the card, as if one of the components is loose or vibrating. It sounds like a mosquito buzz.

Hi,
Quite a few graphic cards seem to be  buzzing around these forums at the moment,
Is there a dodgy batch around at dealers?,
Cant see it being motherboards all the time as a lot are different makes and models having this problem,
Just my observations, but I may be wrong, Doh
