Easy Tune install problem: «open driver handle error»
« on: December 08, 2011, 06:41:32 am »
Once again I am experiencing problems with my Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H. When trying to install EasyTune 6 (ET6 v. B11.0902.1) I get the following error message: «Open driver handle error», with the following message: «0x80040707 Description: DLL function call crashed: CheckFK.SearchBIOSStr
Setup will now terminate»

Trying to solve the problem I have:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the program
2. Removed all references in Program folder
3. Removed all references in registry
4. Used Windows Install Clean Up utility
5. Used Revo Uninstaller
6. Tried to install older version
7. Removed all entries in Install shield folder (which usually solves this problem)
8. Install from safe mode

I have to say I am very dissappointed with my fairly new Gigabyte system, which has caused me a lot of problems! Actually, the reason why I tried to install the ET6 feature (which used to work) was to adjust graphics performance as I experienced poor playback of videos. Yes, I am dissappointed with Gigbyte. I simply don't have the time playing around with these problems, which seem to be a curse...

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi

The one thing you haven't tried which usually helps in my experience is to get the motherboard disk and chuck it in the garbage bin!  ;D

Seriously I don't like any of these bundled utilities that come with motherboards, Gigabyte or any other. Generally there are much better programs available.

If you would like help to sort out the actual problem that first gave you grief then I am quite ready to do my best along with many other forum volunteers I am sure. The first thing we would need though is a run down of your hardwarer and a brief description of the problem. ;)

A description of the problem is thoroughly given in my first post. I do somewhat agree regarding your critical views on this software. However it is an official Gigabyte release, and it does after all have cpu, gpu, and fan controlling capabilities which I have made use of and will need in the future. If you are aware of any gpu overclocking utility that will do the job better, then please provide me with the information. I tried ATI tray, but it just resulted in BSOD. With Nvidia this usually isn't a problem, which incidentally reminds me that Nvidia will be the brand I'm going for next time....

I will provide my own solution this time around as well:

1. Restore your computer to the point in time at which ET6 was working.
2 Start the uninstaller and choose the repair option.

Not that hard, I know, but after having tiried all of above, I was nearly giving up. Anyways, ET6 is now back to full functionality.

I ve tried that ET6, does it really offers something? Can we change the bus or the voltage without enter bios?

It offers the opportunity to overclock the system without accessing the bios. Why waste time accessing the bios if it's not needed? I will try to use ET6 first, then revert to bios adjustments if ET6 proves impractical. I am a sucker for GUI applications - as long as they work! Anything that saves time is my friend...

Ok, tell me then... how can I raise cpu voltage through ET6?

ET6 is hardly more than a reporting program and anything of any real value has to be done through the BIOS. You will never find an overclocker using it except as an extra. Everyone who knows anything about overclocking will always use the BIOS.

Alright, I learned today: Uninstalled everything ET6 and followed an online overclocking guide for the bios: Like magic I went from 3200 MHz to 4000 MHz on all 6 cores. Tested and stable.

I have to give it to you: You were right all along.

I would still like to point out that GIGABYTE would make for better support of their product strictly instructing their customers to overclock by bios and not include the ET6 utility at all. The utility would be great if it worked, but it doesn't: Just makes for a confused and angry customer, which I believe isn't exactly what GIGABYTE is looking for. GIGABYTE needs to take into consideration that most customers want the most of their hardware, but simply  don't have the time to play around with software that doesn't work. I must have wasted 5-6 working hours with this issue. That is too much, and something which not speaks in the favor of GIGABYTE when considering a motherboard for my next rig.

It wasn't totally wasted time as you now have learned a good lesson and know far more about overclocking than before.  ;)

I am glad that you managed to get to where you wanted to go anyway which is the main thing.

OK guys. I had this same `open driver handle error` on my UD5, albeit for @BIOS.

It dual boots Win7 + Win8, and the error came up on Win7.

Hmm.. booted to Win8, and @BIOS worked fine.

So the problem isn`t related to hardware or the BIOS, it IS simply your Windows install that is at fault.

By that I don`t mean the difference between 7/8, as it used to work fine on Win7.

I reckon it has something to do with an update, but I can`t tell you which one.

Hope this helps.

Wow - it has been a long time since I gave up on this software. I just get by without it and do ALL OC via BIOS.

I'm going to chime in with a different take. I find ET6 useful, because it's a great auto-tune utility.
Set it up for auto-tune
Iterate
verify stability of last configuration
transfer the changes to BIOS
run Forest run.
